As for carrying the crates yourself, the answer is yes. Other items will appear at the trading post merchant, but where the profit comes is when you haul the chests from and to the correct places. Any other method will result in the game taxing you for transport of commercial goods.
And as s_linkletter stated, you will be taxed to transport trade goods unless you carry them yourself. However, you can transport everything else for free once you have a trade route between the two points. Just got a merc to level 11 in Drombach, but all your Akhedian steel is still in Tiltren? Not a problem with a trade route!
Could afford to buy 10 of each trade good but now you're overloaded? Drop all your other stuff (except enough food to get from here to there) and cart your goodies for a nice profit and increased speed on the trade route.
