Sure does say merchant, but when is there a merchant that needs to be escorted to the starting town (Stromkapp)? I don't remember any merchant escorts in the default starting zone (Tiltren). I'm curious if they started in a different zone.
I definitely agree that the other option is better (because siding with the refugees gets you an extra food vendor), but OP asked about escorting to the town, and bringing the smith to the refugee camp means not doing that.
Hi, go to the Three Hare's Market in Stromkapp. He will leave you as soon as you enter it. :-)
Very very early in the game if you camp in the woods just west of Wilbert's Fishery (around the lake) there is a cutscene event that spawns the merchant after you rest. At least, that's where I've always triggered the encounter. It's not even really worth putting spoiler tags around because he only pays you 15 gold to walk him to town, but early game maybe every little bit helps.
No way! That's such an obscure spawn condition. Crazy.
I'ma have to try that sometime.
