Passive and skill that requires being adjacent?

Good evening, I don't really understand how this works. Do we have to be close to our partner or a few meters away from him? Does anyone have more details please?

Adjacent - position squares at the companions' feet touching with any of their sides (doesn't work if only the corners touch).
