Can you cure the plague-ridden?

I was annoyed at not being able to offer any of my bajillion plague cures for the Plague victims in the Reed basement. So i captured a couple alive, and then gave them cures as prisoners but did it didn't change anything. Is it just not an option or am I missing a step?

After they become PLAGUE RIDDEN they are beyond Cure
