Similar game with a sci-fi setting?
I love the idea but I'm not a big fan of medieval/fantasy settings. Do you know any similar games set in a sci-fi or modern world?

Lived under a Stone until Today :steammocking: ?
The XCOM Remakes (XCOM Enemy Within and XCOM 2 War of the Choosen) woud mostly fit that in many aspects. not all i admid, but i dont seen any other game nearer to that in a modern world variant.

Eh, should have mentioned that I already played xcom, phoenix point and stellar tactics

I don't think there's really a "Wartales in space" game, but somewhat similar games are XCOM series, Battletech and maybe Gears Tactics. And keep an eye out for Menace (from Battle Brothers developers).

Oh, and Jagged Alliance 3 for modern setting.

Menace looks interesting. Never heard of it before. Thanks for the tip.

BattleTech is as close as you'll get from the games I'm aware of.

Not sure about any that are as sandboxy as Wartales or specifically mercenary companies, but a couple of WH40K X-Com type games might be worth checking out if you haven't already: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters and Mechanicus. Edit: Oh, and TROUBLESHOOTER: Abandoned Children

If you're happy to mix in some 4x too (but still with lots of turn based tactical combat) there's Age of Wonders: Planetfall.

And on the RPG front there's Wasteland 2 & 3, plus Rogue Trader (another WH40K one) comes out in December.

There is nothing at all, sorry. I wish. As the other guy said, battletech is possibly the closest thing you will find, and even then its not near close to wartales...

Other titles have turn based combat (nowadays there are tons of games with that) but thats about it, the rest is not near similar to wartales.

So, unless you are looking just for slight similarities you are out of luck. And no, neither age of wonders or the other titles people mentioned are "similar" to wartales, at all. The only similarity is that they have turn based combat (and not like wartales but managing a whole squad not individual units...) but then again, maaaaany games have that nowadays.

And of course many of these titles with turn based combat are garbaje, thats another thing to consider.

If you dont mind playing older games, the king's bounty series (the games on which wartales and all games of this style ares based) is the best thing you going to find but its not science fiction. Its fantasy. There is also king's bounty 2, but its waaaay inferior and worst than the older ones....

And in the same line, heroes of might and magic 1-3 are also pretty good. You also have heroes of might and magic 4-6 but those are not as good as the first ones.

Battletech has the same feel, but in space. It has that mercenay life aspect and turn base combat that people that enjoy this game, might like as well.

He didnt ask if he should buy anything. Besides there are ways to "try" games before you buy it. But i guess people are not that smart...

You'll have to go outside Steam but...

Starsector:
https://fractalsoftworks.com/

Starsector's pretty similar, for me Wartales was "Medieval Starsector with coop".

Very slow development (solo dev I believe) but very, very similar gameplay, just with ships. Battles play out in realtime and you can pause and give directions, or directly control a ship.

Aliens: Dark Descent might be something you'd like. Turn based strategy in a sci fi universe.
