No meaning to these runes, unlike the runes you find in the tombs that allow you to unlock the codex.
Once you guess 3 runes for the specific book, your scholar is supposed to decipher them. But to do that, you need to "learn" all the runes involved. You probably noticed while being in the tomb that there are some rune signs your scholar can learn (for example, solving moving stones puzzle teaches him one of the runes). But I'm not there yet, so don't know any further details about this stage.
@pageaure dont need to deal with the big creeper to get all codexes and runes. There are 3 codexes in each tomb, 2 runes in tiltren, 4 runes in ludern, 3 in each other region.
Thanks for that, I've just finished my first tomb and was completely flummoxed by this.
Once you pick a set of runes and press the "Restoration" button the fact that this a Mastermind mini-game becomes obvious. However therein lies the rub: until you do press that button it is totally not obvious. I don't press buttons that look like something might go badly wrong if I do when I haven't got a clue what the button does. It's a case of pause the game, consult Google and the Steam forum.
Note to devs:
I think you should add something to the dialogue for this mini-game to reassure the player that sticking some runes into the slots and hitting the Restoration button is absolutely OK, nothing bad can happen, and they should try it right now. They'll only have to press the button once, twice max, to fully understand what they need to do.
And when you have two results with two good runes, check the others where you have only one to conclude wich are the good runes
