Yup yup
I tried using a Sentinel over the weekend. Quit the playthrough because it was too hard to make Sentinel work.
Swords out of all three weapon types tend to have the highest damage range for their attacks (The 1h sword that gives damage reduction is 80-100% of your damage, the mace is 60-80%).
Of course I could sacrifice one attack ability for the shield that just gives you riposte, and everytime I engage instead of getting riposte I could get deflection, and fury whenever they disengage, they won't be able to run around without inspiration, but every hit they deal will be at +50%.
...And as I said, I'm not even at level 8 yet, which makes them even MORE powerful. Those annoying dots like fire, poison, bleeding? Not just gone, but gaining a stacking buff from anyone who TRIES to put those on them. Disarm straight out removes an enemies ability to hit you.
My 2h axemen dream of being this useful to be honest. Mace users just kinda...exist... My cutthroat ranger is the only one who can keep up, but that's only after you've primed the battlefield with a bunch of engaged enemies.
Also this strategy has the cost of like...I dunno. One valor point?
This combo also synergizes well with the unique sword, Strongblade, which gives you an attack of opportunity on a target with DOT's. You can get Rage from the burning target and the sword will make an extra attack.
In defense of Brutes, though, a Destroyer makes exceptionally good use of the Smugglers' Arena shield, since it increases damage off of total buffs and debuffs, and no unit can solo stack as much in one turn as a properly built destroyer. Since they also pick up Inspiration in the process, doubling their move, my destroyer can almost always drop two weak/high dmg units even at great distance and then Taunt a third heavy hitter or archer at a net cost of 1-3 Valor, depending on how many disengage hits I'm willing to suffer in the process. The lucky figurine works well, since it drops opportunity attack damage by 50%.
Only gripe is how few legendary swords there are and how many hammers and axes.
Hah! Speaking of praying, you just need to find some cold Inquisition hands to pry it from. Assassination bounties are wonderful for getting all sorts of legal salvage, including those shields.
I have two purple swords, a 1h and a 2h, haven't finished Drombach yet.
The 2h is amazing, 1h is meh.
