Here's the most important tip anyone can give you
Never, ever have a party size larger than 12-13

As soon as you go over this limit:

1. Micro-management becomes extremely tedious
2. You will start to have long-time party members die to BS due to level/power scaling
3. You will spend tens of thousands of gold trying to gear them all
4. Enemy groups will scale to absolutely ridiculous sizes (in adaptive mode)
5. You will burn out extremely quickly when playing

The sweet-spot is absolutely 12-13 companions. You'll prioritize and care about each one of them.

I usually run:

2x Dagger (Medium Armor)
2x Bow (Light Armor)
1x Harpoon (Medium Armor)
1x 1H Axe (Heavy Armor)
1x 2H Mace (Heavy Armor)
1x 1H Sword (Heavy Armor)
3x Ponies

That's 12. You can eg. 1 more Axe/Mace/Sword if you wish.

This is by far the most fun way to play I have found.

1. You can gear your troop fast enough.
2. Cover all professions comfortably.
3. Have between 500-700 carrying capacity between lvl 8-12.
4. The perks you get are the most useful with this kind of troop and upgrading perks can be extremely powerful.
5. You can also make use of the best legendaries with a troop like this.

Battles are challenging but not ridiculous.

What about animals? I don't use those. They are totally unbalanced. Wolves and Boars suck. Mosquitoes and Bears are OP as heck. Animals eat way too much food. Though food does not become a problem later in the game, I still always encourage focus on eating RELEVANT food. So it can be extremely annoying when you are being asked to fill 50-70 food consumption per rest. Bear food consumption is just mental.

What about achievement for having 20 people in your troop? If you care so much about that, capture a bunch of boars or whatever to get it and then eat them all.

Number one tip is actually to play on region locked, because leveling scaling is bad in every single video game. So I completely disagree.

Opinions Vary .
The Most important tip is this ..
Play the game .. curse, restart ,curse ,learn, get that satisfying feeling of finally working it out for yourself..
then if you get stuck look for advice and maybe you'll decide that a 30 man/beast party rocks.

I disagree with you. I have a party size of 23... 16 people, 3 bears and 4 horses (transport only). It's fine, no problem. Each person will have their own experience, so, there.

Yes, yes way. Level scaling is rudimentary and the low-brow way to "create challenge".
If you reduce the mechanics to over-dressed chess for the sake of "challenge" this removes the purpose of every other part of the game. Just play chess.

lol OP tried to trash the game with a review and failed so here we are .

Let me save you the trouble.
HEAVY micro-stutters every 30 seconds.
It absolutely still should be marked "Early Access".
There are numerous UI and quest bugs.
Needs a lot of quality-of-life improvements.
Game still has bugs reported back in December.
Let it stay in the oven for another 6-12 months.
Posted 6 May.

. and then continued too play for 67 more hours ..

I've about that. But have 4 bears, 4 ponies (1 warhorse), 2 wolves (1 alpha), 2 plague rats, 1 of those humanoid things from a tomb, 1 dominant sow. The rest are human. I'm having a blast...on adaptive :PiggyStar:

Edit: I used to have more rats but stupidly chose the breeding option for 2 of them. Ended up with far too many rats and had to eject them from the party.
I only get lag occasionally now. Still micro stutters on the map but I don't care. It was the combat, fishing, mining and forging lag I had when version 1.0 first came out that was really annoying. It doesn't happen as often anymore despite my party composition.

Each to their own. My 63 (+8 benched) company thinks otherwise.

My 14 Level 14 Bears and 5 Level 12 Mosquitos agree. :)

I like micromanagement, main reason i play tactical rpgs. Also in larger parties means enemies are larger= more value from my big 2h aoe units.

I personally like to have 1 of every type unit for each combat tree <except a few such as beast tamer type archers or spearman that are not pikeman.
