when they stand next to each other they get 5% increase in damage. Some chat options also sometimes have ability to give exp to close companions (i was never sure if they meant proximity or relationship though)

It's nothing amazing, especially on groups where you're running a mobile party and hardly ever stand next to each other

wait, that's it? So I am wasting some options to +close relations, just for some cooperative damage boost?

#facepalm.

As far as i've seen so far, yes. 5% damage boost when Best Friends stand next to each other, and that's it. Got about 30 hours of play in a campaign where most of my companions are good relations and quite a few are best friends, haven't noticed anything great besides that.

But i have the memory of a sieve and forgot to mention that if these best friends sit next to each other in camp or/and are assigned to the same station they get +1/2 happiness generation. Forgot to mention that, because I had never struggled with happiness and by the time that started happening the bonus influence just added to my 1500-2000+ influence pool.

Still... not exactly worth it compared to some short term gains, especially since your party will just generally like each other more over time so long as you don't do friendly fire and don't choose bad chat options. Go for actual EXP or even valour over improved relations imo.

One of my characters had a good relationship with the pony... who doesn't fight. ah ah.

It's there to give you an illusion of gameplay depth.
If someones relation ship gets bad enough they leave.

Much better to keep all happy to start with. I'm almost continually at max (15) Happy.

I find that at that level relationships improve by them selves. Thus I get to use "talk" dialogue options for other positives like XP, VP increased Reputation (to be used for negotiations etc)

I don't even pay attention to who has a good relationship I just move who ever is closest to the enemy I want to hit. Just out of curiosity how do you see the relationship with the party members? I hardly ever use the buffs since my party gets so spread out it doesn't even seem worth it to buff one guy. Of course I am on the easiest level so it hardly matters in combat. I suppose a 5% damage boost might be meaningful in the hardest difficulty in an iron man game.

Yeah I obsessed about camp placement because I wanted to boost relations etc.
I can tell you that it doesn't matter, choose the exp options in the camp events, way more important.

Like RainbowPig already said the "best friend" buff isn't really worth all that hassle and +1 happiness in camp if they are adjacent is nice to have but really not needed. The first best friends I had after I already had like 2k+ influence.

Also there is a bugged food item which should give you a 15% influence boost but gives you infact 1500% boost. Noticed it after I gained like 2600 influnce in a single rest.

Got two chars at the campfire who tolerate each other -1, never again I shot him in the back or have chosen a bad conversation option, it went to -2

Maybe I shouldn't let them sit together

I randomly found it somewhere in tiltren. It's the seed biscuit. Playing limited so I noticed it too late to reload again. Just spamed the Banner until I had around the same amount I had befor.

I had the same trouble (I am playing in French but there is the ambiguity still, with the word 'proche'), though when I chose to increase the relationship my ranger (he was friend with 4 people) he gained new relations... with the animals. That were next to him.

I wished they would have written "nearby" ("à proximité" in French) instead, to make it clearer.
