"Only your strongest potions" achievement: only 1.1% of players have this? :o
You get this achievement for applying an oil to the main weapon of every merc in your band.

Well, I got some oil recipes. One is the Strength Oil I, which gives a 10% Str buff (augmented by Strength Oil Concentrate) and Sharpening Oil I, which gives a flat +10% crit chance.

Looking at these buffs I couldn't set off to the local rats nest fast enough to get the necessary plague samples to make the Pristine Essence you require to brew these oils. Thence straight back to the Apothecary's shop to make them and apply them to everybody's weapon. No-brainer.

That's how I got this achievement. Then I noticed only 1.1% have it. WTF? Why isn't everybody doing this?

Lack of information/tutorial. Lack of the necessity of min-maxing. Pretty much it. I only paid attention to Oils in my second or even third save, dont properly remember now.

I thought oils were a one use per battle item so I didnt bother with them.

I had the materials and recipes for oils for quite some time before I also realized that I was missing out on this. I might be mistaken, I'm at work at the moment, but you can't see a description of what an oil does until you craft it, correct?

I also thought this!

Yes. Thats the first thought as well. Which enters the lack of information/tutorial category. Also, for some reason, the description of some items are really poorly done. Specially some skills's descriptions from weapons.

Ah, I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

Why would anyone in their right mind slog though a Godforsaken rat's cave to knock over these horrible pillars for half a dozen measly one-use-only oils? Answer: they wouldn't, duh!

And that's exactly what I thought initially because traditionally in cRPGs, which I play a lot of, weapon coating oils are always per encounter or even per single attack affairs. So the first rats nest I did a I just went for the two nearest, i.e. easiest, pillars before killing the mother rat and GTFO, just to see what the oils did out of curiosity.

It's only when I crafted my first three oils I had the resources for and tried them out that it looked like they'd been permanently applies 'cos they looked to work just like the tracker's armour inserts do. I so Googled to check.

Anyway, next two rats nest I determined to figure out a strategy to get all the pillars and it kinda worked, so that's why I got this rare achievement.

You are right though, most folks are gonna assume these oils are single use affairs, not perma-buffs.

NOTE TO COMMUNITY:

Oils are NOT single use - they give very nice PERMANENT buffs to your weapons. Later game you can apply TWO oils per weapon which I assume stack like the armour inserts do.

DO NOT DELAY - HIT A RATS NEST TODAY!!!
I had to remove all animals/prisoners, swap an oil and reload.

I never received this achievement either, despite all my characters having oil applied to their weapons, Maybe the game is erroneously counting deployable animals? That would also explain the low completion rate.

I can confirm that I have no animals in my party except my ponies, so this looks like a very possible explanation.

Its not counting animals as I got the achievement with a animal filled party, though I am missing some of the simple ones I should have like earning 1,000 in one month.

Achievment "Beware of bites" (Capture a cardinal mosquito) - only 0.8% Don't know why people don't capture them. Mosquito is pretty cool - he can fly far to neutrolise some single archer hiding in a distance behind frontlines and he provides Frenzy buff to nearby units in a camp.

During EA i tried mosquitoes, fun but not worth. Earned the achievment during EA. Didn't captured another one in my new save, cool versus archers but have no place for them, already big party.
For the oils achievement i got it even with animals.
watcherzero May 9, 2023 @ 3:13pm
The mosquitoes bypass armour which is nice and they have a decent very good self healing capability (heal to full after every two attacks), but <50 HP at level 7, cant equip armour means they are likely to die in a single enemy attack and mine was only doing 20 dmg a hit. So just not worth it.

They are really easy to catch, if you get the mosquito spray recipe that does 50% health pool aoe in a large area and automatically captures them, so two throws and I captured four in one go.

So, after reviewing my party, the only reason I can provide as to why I don't have the achievement is that two of the weapons equipped have one oil applied rather than 2. If that's not it, then the other possibility is that Rampage, the unique shield that also acts as a weapon, is not oiled. But I doubt that you can apply oils to shields- maybe I should test this out.
