How do you change difficulty during a playthrough?

The game start says it is possible to do it midgame but I just made a new game and can't see the option?

That got me to, it's a bit counter intuitive. It's not in Options where you'd expect.

Press [ESC]. The panel to the right of where it says Contine, Load, Save, etc... has your current settings. There's a cogwheel in that panel. Click that and change the difficulty there. Note it can't be done mid battle.
