Ive seen it written here that companions must be at campfire, just to share that same activity will do!

Near as I can tell - being in close proximity helps, even if not doing the same thing. My Captain got a bond pretty quick with my spearman who was at the campfire every night, with his back pressed to hers at the strategy table.
And of course my Tinkerer getting "Friend of the Beasts" because she was next to a wolf 15 rests in a row was neat.

Remember where you put the character to, say put them in the tent, is where they are in the world, so if you put two people in the middle of the tent, and 2 in the firepit and line them up it counts for adjacency, also works for Prisoners to completely lockdown two of the flighty buggers

I recall in EA that having best friends came with some additional skills, am I imagining this? Or was this feature removed?

There is a buff, 5% dmg boost if they are adjacent
I wish there were more features here though

I wish there were more features here though

I was sure in EA there was associated skills, like you could get your best friend to make an attack if you were next to them.

I play a lot of turn based games so I may be confusing it with another to be fair.
