Do Enemy Numbers Scale with Companion Numbers?
Hi all, I'm really enjoying Wartales but one of my complaints with this game is that battles have become way too big. I have about 12 total companions and enemies typically have 12-16 enemies. Even though combats only last 2-3 full rounds, the sheer number of units makes the battles drag on. I'm currently in region #3, and my units are all levels 6-8.

My question is: are enemy numbers going up because I'm recruiting more companions? If that's the case, does that mean that if I dismiss companions, enemy numbers will go down? Thanks in advance!

Yes, it grows and if you throw out some, the number of enemies will also decrease.

Awesome, thanks zaphod! Do you know if enemy numbers still increase if I have captured units? I want to be able to have all professions in my troop but only six or so actual fighting companions.

you only deployed half the info and zap only deployed half the answer. the correct answer woud be: yes the enemy number scales with your numbers IF you started your game in adaptive mode....

My mode is region-locked exploration, does that change things?

The number of enemies changes depending on the size of your group also in region locked (probably not in the same way), but it does.

And of course, there is nothing easier than trying it. Save your game and attack the guards, then dump half the party and attack again (after dumping the party(before attack), go through the region and come back).
edit: As for prisoners, what Wadering Flare says below applies. + And I would add that this only applies to prisoners if they are prisoners (if you hire them, they count as classic mercs).

Enemy numbers scale with the number of companions that actually participate in combat. You can have as many work horses and prisoners as you want.

I run with 10 mercenaries and enemy groups are usually 11-14. Seems like the enemy will field 1 to 1.5x your number.
It would be good if a dev could weigh in and give the actual calculations, though.

The ratio is as you write (rather to the higher one)
In region-locked I played (2x) and the enemies were around 9 (for six mercs) and the second game 15-20 (for 10-12 mercs).
I played with four on adapted and it was mostly 6 (it fluctuated for a while when leveling).
...And I'm talking about "common" fights (does not apply to villages, bosses, tombs and maybe also for mosquitoes in Ludern...).

I'm pretty sure that in region-locked the number of enemies doesn't scale. For Tiltren it's around 4-5, for Arthes and Vertruse it's around 9, for Ludern 12-14, etc. Doesn't matter how many soldiers you have. Guards is a special case, they scale both in size and level even in region-locked.
