Gameplay outside combat (camping, exploring etc): Way way better then battle brothers
Just more events outside of combat or are there more types of things to do?
But I'll leave one anyway :)
I loved Battle Brothers for years but to me this game renders it completely obsolete. I'll never go back to watching armies of bobbleheads miss 80% of their attacks ever again. Wartales scratches the exact same itch, but does a better job of it.
And Battle Brothers without DLC? Eww. This already has more content than the base game. Even with the DLC I find Battle Brothers very lacking without the added complexity and variety of the legends mod. I don't find Wartales lacking... yet. They keep adding large new regions, more quests, more skills, more gear.
War Tales has a different sort of rhythm to it that will pull you out of your comfort zone at times if your used to holding position in BB and forcing them to attack you. The combat tends to be less chaotic and more controlled and mastery comes down to group configuration and understanding skill synergies.
As stated above the overworld stuff is far more fleshed out in War Tales and you'll have a fun little sense of adventure as you map it out for the first time. Lots of neat little suprises and reveals as well, its a more grounded "medieval bands" game then BB's mixed fantasy elements, but theres still a few "unnatural" surprises in War Tales.
In the end, after doing a permadeath BB campaign and clearing it, I have no feelings to return to it, however I am tempted to return to this game for the 3rd time since it launched in EA.
But really it's probably best not to compare the two. Their similarity ends at being a band of mercenaries. The more you compare them, the more you'll get disappointed when you feel like something is missing.
I did enjoy Battle Brothers, but Wartales even with it's flaws least won't make you want to punch the monitor.
But if you look at the basics BB is a more open ended, free roam, choose your own adventure type of game with better combat.
Wartales i think, wants to be an rpg but choices don't really matter and the world never changes. Although combat, merc management and exploration is fun . You can get many hours of enjoyment.
Also, everyone has legs and there are kill-sync animations... Oh yea, you can save bears from jail and they have some really funny traits. I hope that helped.
There are several quests and things where your decision can change the outcome of a area or even affect two different areas and later quests if the persons are alive to appear there as example, you will meet them again, if you decided to kill them then they wont be there and the quest will change for you as also the way certain parts of a region work.
Same thing with people you can either recruit, execute or leave them find their demise by others.
Yea, I want more of that actually.
Definitely will revisit later down the road again, making 3 full runs of this game. Just buy it, really cant go wrong. lol
