Arthes (take no sides?)
If I go to Arthes, is there a way to take neither side and kill both sides because they both suck? It seems like it would be a simple thing, I am a mercenary who is driven by money and I should be able to switch sides whenever I want, but that doesn't seem to be the case. How do I make it so I am not attached to either Vernalis or Laheart and am able to just clear out both sides? Can I do that and still get the porridge recipe (which I hear you need to get into one of the castles to get or has that changed)?

Yes you can, there is a third neutral side you can take so long as you've undermined both sides for the rest of the quests.

Porridge can be bought at the shabby camp to the south now, so don't need to side with anyone to get access to it.

Here's my understanding of it. I'm not 100% sure I'm correct, though, so tread carefully and make a backup save.

There's one quest regarding handling deserters that you can get from three locations - one from either faction OR one from a small Legion Camp all the way to the west. Do the Legion Camp's version. Then, do the rest of the zone's campaign quests with this in mind: you can only fully aid each of the warring factions up to once, or you won't get the neutral ending.

  • There is one quest in which you can decide the fate of a well about to be poisoned. Choosing to poison the well or choosing to stop the poisoning of the well counts as supporting one side or the other.

  • There are two quests - one for either of the warring factions - where you escort someone who supports the corresponding faction. At the end of both quests, you are given the option to kill the person you are escorting. Choose to kill the escort for the faction you aided in the well poisoning quest (to neutralize your aid to them there). You can freely do whatever you want with the other escort.

For the escort, so you mean the old man from the abbey? I don't recall getting a chance to betray him but maybe I don't recall.

Roughly as he said then it's sort of neutral ending with the guard/watch ( soldiers in the camp) taking over instead
And slightly different end battle
To kill the abbot btw just steal the food on the cart on the bridge, he gets angry and a fight option appears

EDIT: Haven't played for a long while but it used to well worth killing the captain after the supply camp/black caravan mission to get 2 very nice multi hit spears at his level, one as a drop one from looting the corpse plus a flame sword from the rouge captain of the camp
But maybe those weapons are not sought after now with all the changes
