Well judging from the original post it would appear that it totally stuffs up your game! If it ain't broke, don't fix it..... :-)
2 min of Google solves the myth , but lets just created nonesense.
Open GL stands for Open Source Graphic Library.
Meaning if you buy not the most popular graphic card or SUPER HIGH END graphic cards.
that are sold in limited quantity ,
Usually the graphic card designer AMD or NVDIA , doesn't support your graphic card past 2-3 drivers update.
That is when you use OPEN GL , cause it isn't perfect but better then having no graphic card drivers that are uptodate. and might burn out your graphic card.
Ahhhhhh, good info. Thanks.
Personally I think the reason is because OpenGL is multi-platform, whereas DirectX is only for Windows and Xbox. So if you run the game on Linux, you MUST use OpenGL. But that still leaves me wondering which one to choose if I have the option to use either.
As I said when you have a SUPER HIGH END card , the same thing happens.
Cause if a product isn't sold well enough , no use to spend time on fixing the bugs.
Even if it is a exclusive product, let it to the high end users to fix it.
You think my card is so old.. I can play both DIRECT X and OPEN GL ..
But Direct X made my graphic card fan spin like crazy , while Open GL doesn't .
Get it , some people do monitor their hardware , prevent the paste on the graphic card from burning off.
It saves hiring dedicated programmers to write new Drivers and fix excisting problems.
While LINUX failed in a hardway , cause the consumers prefer simple Windows.
And Companies always move to what is consumer demands.
As the battle between VHS and BETAMAX shown , while Betamax was the better product at that time , VHS simply won cause of consumer preference .
So bringing out the best product doesn't always mean the consumer will like it.
1- you speak of companies - yet the ENTIRE INTERNET runs on linux. EVERYTHING.
2- you speak of consumers - yet there is unprecedented demand for Steam Deck and it's enjoying overwhelming success.
Please don't spread misinformation. There's enough of that outside of the gaming communities.
Your Grahic Driver is still needed, it dont get replaced by open GL nor by Direct X. they are just a bridge betwen the grafic commands from the game to you driver, the basic idea when Microsoft started DIrect X was to Unify the needed command set for each Driver and each Programm, so the max compatibility was avaible.
For the Initial Question: Like i sayed, both are Bridges, but for some hardware its easyer (and much faster) to use OpenGL instead of DX (Mind you one of the first games useing OpenGL as a Prominent Foundation was Quake, the very first one... ) . many ppl seen less stutter in older EA Versions of Wartals when they used DX for example.
