boars to slaughter
so i had a boar with that skill. i could kill it for food. i had it for 4 rests and it only gave me 6 pork. i pretty much spent as much food on him as i got and ive seen screenshots of people getting HEAPS of food.
did i do something wrong? it was beside the fire next to one of my other companions and a bear

maybe he secretly shared his food with the bear? There might a food plot going on behind your back you should investigate that

do i need to use more food than usuall? it says the boar eats the leftovers and i dont give them all food normally as i gain happiness from bear and fire

You need to do two things: First you need to take the level 3 trait for each boar that you wish to use for food instead of the combat trait. This lowers their food consumption by 2.

Then, after several rests you will get a notification that the boar has become "Fat". This trait means that you can butcher it for substantially more Pork, Fat, and a Carcass. I recommend capturing boars that are already level 3 or higher to speed the process.

so i just need to rest until it gets a trait. thats easier as i though i had to keep track of the amount of rests its gotten

Does this not work on crocswines? I've had one with the "Livestock Boar" perk for like 15 rests now and I hardly get anything for slaughtering him.

i eventually got a notification telling me that my pig got fat but i only got around 20 meat, felt like i spent more food on the bastard than what i got. ive seen screenshots of people getting up to 100 meat so i guess its either been nerfed or its luck

I'm not certain but I think the higher the boar's constitution when it meets its unhappy end the more goodies you get - which kinda makes sense, a fat and healthy pig makes more bacon :-) Check out the discussion threads, I'm sure someone's done a whole thesis on optimal hog slaughtering techniques

I've looked over the forum and haven't seen anything substantial. Do you have a link to a more in depth discussion on it?

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't mention anything about Crocswines. You did mention that Dominant Sows don't get fat, so I'm guessing the same is just true of the Crocswines which is unfortunate.

It's random, and it does not change if you reload. The max pork is a stat value permanently attached to each boar upon capture, we just cannot see it. Changing the Con stat does not affect the pork we get.

Crocswine skill tree does have the same structure as the boar. Don't know if it's a bug or a feature, but they don't ever get fat. Pretty sure the Dominant Sow is supposed to do so, so that's a bug.
We're better off using the crocswine offensively.

In the old days, all the animals used to suddenly "get fat", including the ponies. They fixed that.

Seems like they fixed it a bit too well. And I was looking forward to some crocswine BLTs!

Dude, have you not read the description of crocswine meat? Feed your boys that nasty stuff too much and your camp will soon be awash with discontentment and bodily excretions :-)
