COOKING!
You have raw meat but you HAVE to have salt in order to COOK the meat?!?!?!? GENIUS....um....wait.....
Here are some values to cooking that make MUCH more sense.
1. You have to have a cooking talent to cook the meat? ANYone can put meat on a stick and roast it.
2. You want to add quality to food? Ok...raw ... Raw pork = 4 pts.
3. Plain roasted pork = 5 pts.
4. Pork cooked with salt = 7 pts.
etc...

Grab the salt scoop when you have a chance, reduces all salt use by one
so zero salt for basic dishes and one salt for major stuff
It's says troop bonus, but you need it on the backpack of the current cook

Btw all units can multi skill in a small team I have each with 2 or 3 skills then they can swap and change as needed
Te downside is you lose any xp in between levels eg a apprentice with 70 thieve xp swapping to being a miner would lose that 70xp but still keep the apprentice

So if possible max each out on one skill, then swap them to a new skill and max that out too or at least get them to the next level before swapping again

I assume that without the Cooking skill, your mercs are indeed just roasting meat over a fire before eating it and that's the base value of the food because eating raw pork is, you know, going to kill you. Getting the skill and adding salt (an abstraction for other minor prep) levels that up into an actual dish.
