Does the perk also add destabilization debuff to your attacks? If so, then I believe the description doesn't specifically say ranged attacks, instead it says "attacks", it should mean including melee. I did see the description but didn't manage to test it out as my spear guy was a pikeman at the time.
I say this because my spearman has 39% crit hit, plus that would be 79% crit hit and the unit is not rocking crits anywhere near 80% of the time
That doesn't make any sense. you either hit the crit or you don't, you can't have 40% more chance to crit on the crit.
As I and Heavy said, what it appears is that it's a flat 40%. All your attacks have a 40% chance to crit and there is no use in increasing crit hit on the unit
