Or how about removing salt as a cooking item and making it a Trinket(Sell Only) item instead?
Given the time period, salt was a delicacy not used in every single meal, let us cook without it OR only require it in higher level dishes.
My party is on the brink of starving to death because they have no salt yet have 50 pounds of hog meat in stock they can't cook without salt for some reason.

There is a backpack accessory called "Salt Scoop" that you can find/craft via blacksmithing that reduces recipe salt costs by 1, meaning all of the novice cook recipes only require the meat and no salt after that.

Where can you get the recipe for this amazing trinket, pray tell?

If memory servers, Vertruse province bandit lair for the recipe - or any of the randomly generated loot containers at all other bandit locations globally.

My good sir, with a party of 8 humans, 2 alpha wolves, 2 wolves and a dominant sow, I rarely find myself below 3 days of food.

The drying rack is absolutely essential to party health. Converting 2 carcass into 10 meat really reduces the burden, especially if you augment this with cooked fish/wolf/boar from the hunts.

I'm debating adding a permanent slave to my party... if not two.... for another drying rack or two just because of how awesome it is..... and I have a surplus of around 50 carcass right now.
