Armor will come with slots and you need to find Tracker's camps that will offer a higher quality recipe as a reward for the questline and sell lower quality armor layer recipes in exchange pristine fangs. First Tracker's camp in Tiltren is Northwest of StromKapp keep following the road past the lumbermill.
You will create armor layers at the forge with your blacksmith once you receive the recipes. You will need to obtain some white leather from phantom wolves and boars that spawn in the forests occasionally for the best recipes. Those fights are much more difficult than normal animals.
Once you have an armor layer in your inventory you just open the character sheet of the guy you want to add it to and right click the layer from inventory. All of the other materials are common or bought from merchants (coal is bought from the blacksmith).
You can also craft armor with slots and if you are lucky you can craft up to 3 slots. Crafting 2 slots is guaranteed if you hit all the plates yellow. You are going to need a lot of iron and leather if you want to craft your own gear. Iron can be hard to come by, the best place is to find mines and mine it, the mine will occasionally replenish the iron and become available to mine again.
Its a Search Quest, the Stables is the Hind
If you wanna know exactly:
[spoilers] You will Find a Corpse near the Stable, which will after examine it, show you a Blood Trail, follow it brings you to a Special Ghost Animal Pack, thats the one to Kill[/spoiler]
The stables is south of Stromkapp it's probably the first building you ever saw in the game. There is a dead body across the road it's a small thing to highlight so it's easy to miss.
After crafting 50 layers, you can remove the layers from armor without destroying them. This allows you to keep your good enhanced layers to upgrade the better armor you get from drops and merchants, as long as it has at least one slot. Layers are good all through the game, but they really shine for levels 5-6 where the crafted armor is at level 5 and on par with what you would get from drops, especially with three enhanced layers that give bonuses to stats. From level 7 on, crafted armor is much worse than dropped or purchased armor and you are likely to simply not have layer slots to use the layers in. Still, keeping your enhanced layers from removing them after crafting 50 gives you options you would have to use resources to obtain otherwise. I would suggest getting the 50 crafted layers from regular layers that don't use white leather, so you aren't using all that expensive white leather just to reach a title. Same idea for armors, rags count as armor, so just craft a ton of them to get to 50 crafted armors.
To note, if you are also going after 50 crafted weapons for the weapon buff on craft, throwing knives don't count as weapons crafted, I'm assuming throwing axes don't either, leaving the bec de corbin or the seax as the most inexpensive options to reach 50 crafted weapons
