if this is to send him to battle you will have to wait for him to level up (automatic process) and choose the "war pony" path ^^
I have a 15 man squad, and 15 Ponies. I only ever have to rest to get Valour Points. I can run at a very fast speed, and that will increase even more when 10 of them get to Lvl 8. The 5 I captured were Lvl 8 already.
..............so, that's Ponies for you. Get some more.
A good ploy is to buy trade goods every time you go to town and they're available. When you've got a lot, and a trade mission is offered take it, and go sell your goods(you get Border Passes later in the game - but don't wait for them, just pay the 200 Krowns).
Early on you might need to capture enemies to get a bounty from the Prison. Later on, I just don't really bother. If you get a healthy balance, just buy trade goods every time they're available. You'll soon have a surplus to buy those lovely Skill Books, and Ability Books.
[Edit]
Point being - Trade Goods are heavy. You need a good few Ponies to do this.
