You just have to understand the mechanics of the enemy in question. Search for guides and YouTube videos, it gets really easy after you get some experiance and understanding.
And then get blocked by their own friendly when it's their turn.
Some archers with infantry sub class and valorous support work well against animals.
If both have valorous support you literally just stand with your back against a wall and mow down the animals before they get close. If they do get close, spear wall will stop them and your warriors/brutes/rangers/swordsman can finish them off. (I usually have my rangers do it, as they gain a valor point per kill, and can throw a knife after using a skill, so they kill the wounded wolf, throw a knife at the closest wolf, then run behind my spear wall.)
Additionally, the push back on the spear attack will force the enemy to move, triggering any left over archer overwatch shots.
