Lock Picking Guide

Lock Picking is essential for some quests, and is one of the least intuitive mini games.

Basically you have to follow a few steps:

1. Get lock picks, they are purchasable from random merchants or can be made from one iron ore by the tinkerer.

2. Assign a party member as a thief. Depending on how much theft you plan on doing you may want to have a permanent thief, or you may be able to get by having it as a rotating job with other jobs you don't care about as much. Leveling up the thief occupation will not help with the lock picking mini game, though it will reduce the suspicion you gain from stealing items.

3. Get to picking. This is better explained through the video. Every lock has a hidden shape that looks like a pie with a single piece cut out. As you click you push the lock pick into the lock and you want to listen for it to make a dull metalic click which means you hit a wall of the pie shape. Quickly let off on the pick or you will break it. The farther in the pick goes before the click the closer you are to the sweet spot. Keep on repositioning to find the right place.

Extras:
You can just spin the lock pick around and listen for a quiet part of the lock and that should get you close to where you need to be from the beginning.
When you go to the next tumbler of a lock the shape inside randomly resets so you can have cases where the sweet spot is actually in the same place.
Some locks are extra picky and will have very narrow channels you have to find, don't expect them all to behave the same.

I've also found that as you get closer to the right spot, the pick goes just a little further before stopping. That one trick has helped me immensely with lockpicking success.

You can also savescum to get rewards you actually want, if you're a deviant like I am.

Oh interesting, I've been trying to figure out which rewards are randomized and which ones are set.

it is so easy, never failed so far, just use your ears, it is all about the sound.
if you hear a "chkrr" then it's the wrong spot, nothing more and super easy.
(ok maybe there is somewhere a super strong chest with more skills needed...)

The noise is good.
Also looking at the tumblers as they slide to the right helps. Find a mark, or piece of reflection on the tumbler and watch as it slides.
Doing that it almost becomes exactly like the fishing mini-game. Just left clicking rapidly watching the slider (and listening).

On this I noticed the only place I been able to get the Pocketbook by re loading is in the guard camp next to sinister cave. No where else have i been able to get it.

There are 10 "bandit chests"

3 in vertruse (flooded mine, sentinel tower, bandit lair)
5 in Tiltren (lightHouse, Mount Altis, bandit lairs 1 and 2, camp in front of the refugee mine)
2 in Arthes (bandit lair, tower bottom right of the map)

In those chests you can find any belt Items, any backpack items, and the hook (those items can only be found in those chests - quests aside)
