Though I'm sure someone who does play the game will tell you if you can.
Be picky. first knowledge points are easy to get. The more you advance the harder it is to get a new one.
Theoretically you can unlock evrything with the pocketbook (+5 "wisdom" every rest)
But once the 3 first regions are cleared you'll probably need 300 wisdow for 1 point. (then 310 320 330...) therefore 60 rests... and you will be far from the end.
With 4 pocketbook after 1 year I didn't unlock everything at all.
You can't savescum easily the bandit chests to get a pocketbook anymore. So it's even harder.
Good news however. There's a lot of "useless" knowledge.
I'm gonna talk about free mode (not region locked mode)
Crafted equipment allows you to jump (like stairs) with tier 2 and 3 providing a significant bonus if they are crafted at the right time. Buying/looting equipement match more with your current lvl.
But at some point crafted weapons/armor are going to be obsolete.
I personnaly never craft any equipment (except for achievements).
I like the crafted spears better than any drop, and you don't get many dropped or offered. Even worse for Maces, they're almost none existent. I like 2 or 3 Destroyers, so crafting is pretty essential for me. I just love getting those Steel Guisarme.
I cheated some knowledge points to test out smithing items that I do not really want, cooking fish, cannibalism, tanning bodies and such. I mostly do not use these abilities, cannibalism is extremely useless and smithing has only a few good weapons. Steel seax comes to mind, Steel Guisarme is also good if you cannot get a legion Guisarme, but if you check the merchants it should not be hard to get.
The advanced steel armors are very good though.
So, yes - be picky =)
As mentioned above - Weapons and Armors are most useful, provided you have the req to use them.
The knowledge tree portion has a few things that look good in the beginning, but wind up being useless very quickly, frugality, rationing and cannibalism come to mind, don't bother with them. Feat makers is nice for an extra potential valour point, but the difference between running at ten max valour or 11 max valour is negligible. For money is nice, it adds up, but would I spend the point there if I could do it over? No. I would suggest just forgetting the knowledge tree entirely and focusing on using kp to unlock recipes and blueprints that will at least give a bit of kp back the first time you craft them. Pristine essence is one of the most important recipes to unlock, but you don't need to unlock it until you can destroy all plague infested outgrowths of a rat's nest when destroying the rat's nest. Don't destroy infestations until you can do this or you will lose out on the supremely important sample component, which is only dropped by plague infested outgrowths and is a primary component in pristine essence, which is a primary component in a ton of recipes that give kp on first craft and are sold by the apothecaries.
Right now I am 100 hours into my second playthrough (made some regrettable decisions in the first playthrough, started over after about 40 hours) and I am sitting on top of 41 knowledge points that I don't know what to do with. Spend your knowledge points- it's not hard to get more. Sure, there are some good and bad choices for the early game since points are not as easy to get as mid-game, but there will be plenty more.
My method does have some prerequisites: master blacksmith, master cook, Master Craftsman Medal (gotten from building your first trade route between travel posts).
- use your master cook to make delicious versions of Lake Fish Terrine (knowledge XP) and Lavender Syrup Biscuits (profession XP)
- eat the food, rest, get the buffs
- with the medal equipped, craft a ton of food and armor
It's not rocket science or some secret method that requires a detailed explanation, it's just what has been working for me to accumulate more knowledge points than I know what to do with. I hope this helps some people who were searching for the same thing as me and found a lack of information.
There are some things you really want asap.
Mid game, once you get the Craftsman Medal, you'll generate knowledge points like nothing. A master Bard generates ~2 knowledge points per song (1-3 depending on how many you already have earned).
Of course you can generate even more if you pass the medal between your master cook, blacksmith, alchemist and bard.
