Cold Fear

No Controller support
So I'm running the game on Win 10... on a laptop. Xbox controller doesn't seem to work. A cursory check makes it appear USB controllers don't work for this game on WIN 10. Has there ever been a fix? Or some way around it?

The steam product page does not list "controller support". It's rare that old ports from the PS2 era have controller support on PC.

There are free programs where you can remap your keys to the controller. I never used them so idk which one's the best. Just search for controller mapping software or something along those lines. I'm sure there are tutorials on youtube.

//Edit:
I just checked and you can actually map your controller in this game. Just go to options -> control config. and map your controller.

That won't work for modern controllers. It may work if you use an older controller that was around during the game's release year, like the logitech gamepads. From what I hear it's more an issue with windows 10 not supporting detection with older software titles like this one, so you may have to use something like JoyToKey to map keyboard and mouse functions to a controller, which will then let you use modern controllers on old titles.

When running it on Win10 and through steam, it was able to pick up my ps5 dualsense controller.... mostly. There are some button mappings that refuse to bind, even though I can bind them in the config screen to a key and it read said key, but when I go in game and try to use the particular buttons, they refuse to function. IE: The R1 button bound to sprint will not work. The character does a half second pause when I press the button, but then stops. Similarly the 3rd person and 2nd person mappings (L1 and L2) are very finnicky. Sometimes I press the button and it works like it should, other times i'll press the button and it becomes a toggle. Other times I have to hold the button down to aim. It's very strange.

I do still have an old logitech gamepad I used with the game a decade and change ago, so i'll try running that when I can find it. It should be able to detect it natively and I might have to disable the steam controller support altogether (as the key bindings steam is using are just very, very wrong).

I add this also happen in other very old games with my xbox 360 controller, this is because they need a analogical controller, while it and all modern controllers are only digital. So I have a second one only for this games, a old very cheap controller, that support both analogic and digital at a press of a button, is not as good as the Xbox 360 one but is good enough for this old games. So IMO the best for those that want to play such old games, is to try find a very cheap analogical controller in a store, and if not possible to buy new anymore, then in second hand.

you can try with steam controller input options, or use Anti Micro to customize all the buttons to controller
