Softlock in the first 20 minutes??

So I bought the knee-bending and jump height. Still needed 5 coins for the pick-axe. Searched high and low. Found nothing. Finally went though the dark area and came out with the first enemies which I can only run from. Got some more coins so I could finally go back through the dark area and buy the pick axe...only to find the way now blocked off.

So I did everything I could think of in that area and yep just *stuck* without the pickaxe. Can't go forward and can't go backwards.

I just figured it out.

I played dodge ball with the enemies and got to the guy complaining about not having the 42 coins got the extra heart. Collected all the coins and was just stuck. Finally went to the hospital after getting whacked on purpose. Felt like an idiot after that. *facepalm* Wasted 30 minutes on a literal non-puzzle.
