I have been trying this for the last 20 minutes or so, having gotten the door open by hovering between the rod and pipe and opening the door that way, I thought I had forgotten something and no doors are open for me to leave.

That the purple gun had the extra feature needed here wasn't clear at all, and it working on wood, which is non-conductive the thought never crossed my mind.

The thing with wood is a bug.
There is an easy to reproduce way to solve this.
I can't explain without seeing a screenshot though.
