For me yes, though I have not been able to get the resolution fix to work on my system, so I have to play with my display set to 1024x768. Set to fullscreen it's still playable that way though... I can't say whether the resolution fix problem is in any way related to Win 11 - my bet is it's more likely something to do with my system.

i thank you a lottt from Belgium , have a good day Regards Jean Pol
diverbul, what i have found is that since i started using GWX gold in 2012 it is best to run on a TV instead of a monitor, all my problems where all with the use of monitors ,i am currently running in 1080 on a 43" TV and it runs beautifully, hope this helps..Happy Hunting .....SNAFU

Answer is Possibly yes, but why? Why do you want to play such an old version of the GWX mod in 2025? when there is GWX Knights Cross with everything visually remastered with 1080p support.?
There is also One Alex, or NYGM fifi enhancement too, these are the three most modern SH3 super mods for 2025, If you are not running one them, I really have no idea what you are doing playing stock SH3 or such ancient mods, unless you have a very VERY old PC.

Coming back to this game after decades... I hadn't even heard of GWX Knight's Cross. I have installed it but need to change my screen to 1024x768 to play it - so I gather playing in 1080p (or 1920 x 1200 in my case) still requires the separate resolution fix? (Which I was unable to get to work with GWX Gold)

No worries, Not your good, If you grab Knights cross, OA or NYGM they run in 1080p out the box, the resolution fix is built in already. I will unashamedly suggest KC as I'm one of the developers on it, but any of the three should serve you well, Check Subsim, for DL links.

Ok then KC it is, thank you... and since I have the privilege here of asking one of it's developers directly, I have two questions:

1) Given that the resolution fix is already built-in do you know if there is a way for me to un-stretch the screen vertically? It all looks great other than my gauges and periscope/UZO viewers being oval instead of circular and my sailors all being a little unnaturally tall and thin looking... My monitor is 1920 x 1200 (although I am playing at 1024x768 - see below).

2) If I set my screen resolution to anything other than 1024 x 768 the game will not launch. ('Cannot initialize 3D engine'.) Why is that so if the resolution fix is built-in?

It is an incredible looking overhaul and I am really looking forward to getting into it further, I just want to make sure I am seeing it at it's best. I'd welcome any advice you can provide.

Thanks,

1) ahh no we're locked at 1080p, your monitors aspect ratio is a touch taller than what is now standard. We might be stuck with that one - we could try running it in windowed mode.

2) Thats strange, The game should launch just fine with your monitor set to its native resolution, in fact usually the inverse happens - and you will get that error if your monitor is set to anything BUT its native resolution or DX9 components are missing from Windows. So one thing You could try is the the games /data/cfg folder and in the Main.cfg file, open in notepad text edit the "FullScreen=Yes" to a "No" and save that. Then set your display to its 'Native' resolution 1920 x 1200 and try to launch the game
Have to agree with all the above and i don't know why it does what it does as i am just an old man playing games since the early 1980's on my Commodore 64 and playing with all the windows iterations since that time ,but i have found as previously stated in other posts that with the advent of widescreen monitors 3440X1440 curved was my last it just would not run full screen before reverting to a new smart TV with the chips they have built in and this being 43" and native being 3840 x 2160 and running GWX KC straight out of the box it runs absolutely perfect in 1080p and as i have said i am extremely grateful to all at SUBSIM and the team for all the work they have put in over the years, you have made a now bedridden old man extremely happy in his old age.....Many, many thanks....Happy Hunting ....SNAFU.... PS If any of the ladies and gents at SUBSIM ever found the time to make a game built around the same setup as they did with SH III but with a better engine and graphics i would give every penny i could spare to a crowdfund or whatever, sorry for going on but the drugs keep me up at night and i don't get much sleep these days....SNAFU

Is there an option to play the GWX Gold mod without the grey ship icons ? I understand that it's part of the idea to make it more realistic so you are forced to identify each ship properly rather than having a green/blue/red colour already telling you if it's neutral/friendly/hostile. But in case I don't want that realism, can I have the vanilla icons back ?

Thanks for the suggestion, but no joy... Have already tried windowed mode - tried again, no luck, no matter what I set the game and/or screen to, including a 4:3 aspect display ratio of 1600 x 1200 (windowed) to deal with the stretching effect.

Edit:
- Launching in Windowed mode the top of the window always says 1024x768, no matter what I set in main.cfg and my display settings.
-Launching in fullscreen mode only works if main.cfg and my display settings are both 1024x768 = otherwise I get the 'Can not initialize 3d engine' message.
What could I have done wrong??
