Silent Hunter III

Way too many aircraft encounters, any mods/even cheats...to reduce?
Currently use stock, no mods version of Silent Hunter 3, trying to finish my first campaign.
Late war, Nov. 1944, 40th patrol.

Now I understand that aircraft was one of the biggest threats to u-boats in ww2 and that there was more aircraft and better coverage late into the war, and pretty much at this point the war was lost anyways, nice I think most of us ww2 fans know all this.

But in the end, this is a video game, you have time compression (which is not historically accurate obviously), and even if the encounter rate is historically accurate, for the purposes of a video game, it is ridiciously annoying and tedious.

Tedious is the key word here because it isn't really a "problem" or "difficult", because you can simply crash dive, which works like 99% of the time to escape without any damage.

Of course I've complained about this before and was annoyed by this before throughout my 40 patrols, but this is getting beyond ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying as hell and making the game very hard to play (as far as being fun to play goes).

Now, I am not sure how the aircrafts are programmed into the game exactly or how they spawn or whatever, but it certainly seems the game just randomly spawns them in positions close to everywhere you are traveling, so basically no realistic patrol patterns or accounting for fuel usage, etc.

How do I know this? Because I have tried everything: It doesn't matter, if I change course, speed under or above water, or if I stay under water for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, whatever, almost literally the moment I pop out of the water by surfacing or looking with the scope or if not at the moment, with minutes (or seconds of time compressed usage) there are ALWAYS aircraft now. The only time I get any break anymore is if the weather is very bad with rain and fog with only 400 meter visiblity.

Night time does not help anymore. Using the snorkel does not help anymore, they always are able to detect me and bomb me if I just use the snorkel, which I think even today, modern radar can't pick up such a small object in the middle of a vast ocean that also has radar absorbing material on it...

Anyways, I don't want anyone that might read this to try to start an argument about realism even if this somehow is all 100% realistic and historic, because I am at the point where I don't even care and just even want to stop playing the game before just finishing the campaign.

I am pretty desperate by now and would like either a mod, or editting some config file or even straight up cheats to reduce the number of aircraft you encounter or how easily they detect you or how much they spawn.

As it is, with even excessive use of time compression, a single patrol takes me 6+ hours from leaving dock to returning to dock, this was when aircraft wasn't that much of a problem, but now with aircraft being so tedious my patrol times are now up to 8, 9, even 10 hours long just because of having to constantly crash dive and surface, crash dive and surface, etc

There is no way I'm playing another campaign to the end of the war, but I would like to finish the campaign at least once, and especially so, because as soon as I finish this campaign, I would really like to start a new campaign from the war start, but iron man it (in which case I highly doubt I will survive into the end of the war anyways to have to worry about planes as much of an issue that they are now).

Anyways, if anyone knows some mods, tweaks, tips, tricks, cheats, etc on how to deal with tedious aircraft annoyance, then please let me know...

Hey.
If you look in the ...Steam\SteamApps\common\Silent hunter 3\data\Cfg folder you have Airstrike.cfg Open it with Notes or any texteditor. Here you can set Max range for the planes, too long in vanilla game, modifier for different airbases, different air strike probabilitys, atenuation factor and steps between air strikes.
The problem in vanilla game is the long range of aircrafts that will have you in range of several air bases and the high probability for more aircrafts joining in the attack, giving waves after wave of planes. In GWX the settings are like this:

Maximum Aircraft Range=2000
Poor Airbase Modifier=0.2
Novice Airbase Modifier=0.6
Competent Airbase Modifier=1.4
Veteran Airbase Modifier=2.4
Elite Airbase Modifier=3.0
Night Modifier=0.2
Default Air Strike Probability=35
Enemy Air Strike Probability Increase on Radio Messages Sent=25
Friendly Air Strike Probability Increase on Contact Report Sent=50
Enemy Air Strike Probability Increase on Player Detection=40
Atenuation Factor=10
Logic Steps Between Air Sessions=20

There are other things changed in GWX ofc but this will give you harder but fewer planes per attack.

On the snorkel, even with the radar coating on it you will be picked up by radar if you pop the scope, or if your conning tower breaches the waves. You are close to the surface when snorkling.. In RL they could on use the snorkel in flat seas as it would shut a valve and suck air from the interior of the boat everytime a wave drowned the snorkel. Not good for the crew. And on a flat sea a snorkel is easily seen from the air, radar or no radar.

Thanks very much for your response and post, this looks like it will help me a lot without having to install an entire mod or whatever.

But, can you please explain the settings a bit more, mainly do higher or lower numbers make less aircraft encounters.

I mean Maximum Aircraft Range is pretty obviously, but for example with Default Air Strike Probability does a higher number mean more encounters or less encounters?

The modifier for airbases gives harder enemy air power with higher settings.
Night modifier gives more air attacks at night with higher settings.
Default air strike probability gives a higher amount of attacks with higher settings.
Increase on radio messages sent, contacts sent and player detection gives a higher risk of air attacks over the default setting with higher settings.
Atenuation factor I am not sure on, but should give a faster decrease from increased probability on each air session with higher settings.
Logic steps between air sessions should give longer times between each take of from airfields with higher settings.

So setting shorter range gives less airbases that cover your position, lower modifier gives more misses from the planes, lower default gives less risk for air attacks, lower increase settings gives less risk for more attacks after you have been detected, higher atenuation will drop back the enemy from alerted to default setting faster. And a higher stteing on logical steps gives you some more time between each patrol flight. More time for recharging..

Thank you very much for your good answers and replies! I tried some different settings and it is MUCH better, makes the game fun and playable again. I still get aircraft encounters, but just not every 10 seconds anymore.

What i like about the aircarft threat is that it makes more sense to play vii instead of ix, because its kinda where it really matters. The game is kinda generous with the idea of crash dive against aircarft, tho it also sends alot of random aircart towards you when they have no idea you're there.

Your only a few months and a couple patrols from the end. Yeah, it turns into a game of I'm up, they see me, I'm down at the end and makes for a long day. There was one patrol where I actually thought I would run out of battery but the weather finally turned good and I had flak. I just survived a war with a Type IX B on the standard game but I pretty much quit trying to get to my assigned grid and did whatever I wanted to use up my ordnance on the way near the end. For instance, I was at Bergen and they sent me over to the west of Portugal and I just went and hit Scapa Flow along the way and used everything there. Didn't even get to Loch Ewe before everything was gone.

I've never crash dived. I always just try to make sure I have that periscope depth icon on screen and hit it the very instant I have a radar contact.

The bad news is the aircraft and the destroyers get so good. The good news is that when you do find a merchant its almost never just one.

I would leave it alone and play it out since your almost done. It's a great time to do the things you want to do and maybe hit a new port instead of trying to complete long haul missions that aren't really achievable. There's no big celebration at the end or anything, it's just over. The way I actually found out was it offered TYPE XXI for 0 renown and so I thought ... Hmmm, OKAY!!! When I clicked it said "The War has ended" LOL!
