Number of missions in a career
How many missions are in the career mode if you started in 1939?

It would depend on how long you stay out for

...and how often you return with damage to repair, and how many times you switch boats.

The number of missions in a career is from war's 9/1/1939 start till war's end 5/9/1945. In addition, Your active status at sea of how many times you go out is like what dennis.danilov said. If you make it till the end of the war you will know, you will get a radio message telling you or on your map all the allies will be nutral and you just return to port to end the game.
I have survived the career mode in the default game SH3 1.0v when it was first released... New versions should be the same..

That is because your "inbase time" is 28 days. If you want more time out at sea and less in base then goto your steam directory via "windows explorer" and locate the game.

Steam\SteamApps\common\Silent Hunter 3

go into the sh3 directory and get to the data directory, your looking for the Cfg folder in there.

Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Silent Hunter 3\data\Cfg

make a copy of the "Basic.cfg" file and rename it some else as a back up. like "Basic.c_g"
in case you make a mistake.

useing a text editor like note pad open the "Basic.cfg" and find this line under [TIME]...

NbDaysInBase=28

change it to

NbDaysInBase=7

Save the file..

Now you will spend 7 days in base refit time instead of 28 days refit time. So the war will no longer pass you by as you sit on the side line.

Unfortunately career mode is not my thing, I prefer the single missions.

When do I get another U-boat in career mode

Career mode without any modifications or edits is what I like to do. I usually get 48 - 53 patrols if I survive. I usually start with a Type VIIB and upgrade to a Type IXB after the transfer to France and then I usually upgrade to a Type IX DII around patrol 31.

You have to transfer to 2nd Flotilla (Lorient) to do these upgrades but you don't have to stay there.

I have done the renown point cheat to get a Type XXI once. It's a great boat that requires you to adjust your tactics to use it properly and it's kind of fun but it isn't really historically accurate. Only two of them were built and the war ended before either of them sunk even a single ship.

I try to role play the career of a U-Boat skipper. Start with a VIIA in 39 patrol for 6-8 weeks depending on how many torps I use, turnaround in base 4 weeks. If my sub gets damaged I use die roll rules from Compass Games Steel Wolves to simulate dockyard delays etc.

I will generally put the VIIA in for a refit of two months towards the end of 1940. And I simulate the withdrawal of the VIIA to training command at some point in 1941 with a six month gap built in for a new build either VIIC or IX. I then continue with patrols as described above with a once a year two month refit.

After the rebase to Norway I again simulate being selected for command of the prototype of the new XXI U-Boat - obviously by this point (if not sunk) I am a highly decorated U-boat skipper probably with rank of Captain. I then play cagey/careful until the war ends.

I use GWX and SH3 Commander, SH3 Commander allows you set time in base to whatever your want. I also cheat the renown values for new subs and equipment upgrades as successful commanders would be moved onto better submarines over time and all subs would receive upgrades as they became available. I dont like the game mechanic that uses renown for promotions in rank and equipment upgrades/new subs - so I keep my renown for promotion.

This is still a great game, happy hunting!
