first the officers:
I have a total of 5 officers.
I keep 3 marked for engine room duty and helmsman duty.
I rotate them this way:
Engine room duty -> helmsman duty -> bunk
I keep the other two officers for surface watch or navigation duty.
I rotate them between surface watch and the forward bunk.
With contact, I will pull an officer from the bunk for weapon officer duty.
for the enlisted crew:
First I max out having as many NCO's as possible.
I have two engine compartment crews.
they occupy the engine room and the aft bunk area.
I have two crews for the control room and radio room.
I have two crews for the watch.
I have a medic nco who lives in the forward bunk and is always there.
I have a spare nco or two and a spare enlisted or two.
when I am underwater, I fix everyone in either a bunk or a duty station, I do not have excess staff.
I use folk in the bunk area to reload torps when needed and to make emergency repairs.
I rotate crews every couple hours.
If crew fatigue management is something you'd prefer to do less of (or not do it at all), then try using SH3 Commander (also referred to as 'S3C' / 'SH3C').
It's a separate application that you launch before running SH3, and it allows you to customise many features of the game, including changes to how crew management works (you can even disable it completely by choosing the 'No fatigue' in SH3C's Gameplay Options screen)

If you use the GWX3 mega mod, you will also need to download this in order for SH3C to work correctly:

Thanks for this. I agree the crew change thing is a bit of a pain, and feels unrealistic. I have just installed GWX, and will give this a try.
