Silent Hunter III

Silent Hunter III

EASY way to install GWX!!!
There's one way of installing GWX and other mods to this game shared by FIEDLER in this thread, and there's an easy, much quicker way I found to do it that works.

NOTE: IT IS OF BENEFIT TO MAKE A BACKUP OF THE STEAM INSTALLATION BY MAKING A ZIP FILE OF THE Silent Hunter 3 FOLDER AFTER IT INSTALLS, before doing anything else. That way you have a backup. If your game doesn't run delete the folder from your library and replace it with the one in the zip. Most mods can be un-done if they don't work or you don't like them by replacing the data folder with the backup data folder.

1. Install the steam version.

2. Download GWX from:
http://www.thegreywolves.com/support/

3. Install GWX to the Steam version by directing the installer's path to wherever the steam version is installed to.

DONE! GWX runs.

Any other mod *except ARB's 1920x1080 GUI mod* is optional and can be installed by dragging the files from the downloaded archive to the steam library folder of the game's data folder. It's that easy and it works.

We don't need to run the Steam fix, Front-End, GWX, or GWX-specific 'supplemental files'.

Front-End took some effort to get running for me and it didn't work anyway after getting it running.

These are additional, optional MODs. We only need to install them if we want them. They're not required for GWX to run:
- Conus-Widescreen for resolution 1360x768 and 1366x768
Can be installed by dragging the files to the data folder. Doesn't require JSGME or anything else.

- Ahnenerbe-Widescreen for resolution 1920x1080
* This installation is a bit involved but it's not too difficult if you follow the readme included in the download. We do need to follow the instructions for it. The steam version exe does need to be patched with both the Tycho and H.se Patch in order for this mod to work.

The H.se patch can be gotten from here:
https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=174225

Tycho's patch is included in the Ahnerbe MOD archive.
The H.se patch can be run on the default exe Steam installs, or after using Tycho's patch.

I understand that this is meant to be a shorter version of my guide.

But you've left out some very important steps(A number of holes in your plan!), your install is going to be unstable and it'll crash. Maybe that's why you've left SH3 behind i the meantime: Because it crashes on your end as you said. Several things that you wrote there, are wrong and only quicker because you left some important details out! In our last chat it turned out that you didn't apply the Hsie patch correctly either.

Well... So much for the "easier" way... and so much for "We do not need to do x or y or z.". Remember when you wrote: "Isn't it easiest to open main.cfg and simply change the resolution in the config file?"

This is one of the perfect examples why I repeat to say: Stay off those "easier ways". And you must use the SFSF-Steamfix, otherwise you WILL run into problems later!

Thanks to both of you for the useful guide.
I downloaded a GWX.exe from the GW website, but when I try to install it in the game's directory, it says the GWX3-7.bin file could not be found in the directory, it won't let me even install it.

This is my game's directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Silent Hunter 3
Update on my previous comment... I have installed the GWX3 in the game, yet whenever I load a mission, the game freezes just before the loading bar reaches 100%, is there something I'm doing wrong, or forgetting? Any feedback and help will be appreciated.
I had the same kind of issues regardless of the installation method I used. I quit playing these Silent Hunter games that made me mess with their files more than I got to actually play the game.

My suggestion, and what I did, was bought Uboat. It's newer, way - extremely, more stable and all that's required for it to run so you can play is installing it.

The subsim community forums might be better help to you if you'd like to continue trying to get this game going: https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/index.php

I tried that as well as other communities that still exist for these games. I unfortunately wasn't able to get them running well enough for me to be able to play them. I hope you have better luck than I did if you continue trying.

Uboat's a great game, I'm enjoying it.
Hey Jack, there you are, nice to meet you again! :) Long time :)

Subsim? No. Actually quite the opposite: Things only seem so difficult, because most forum-people just say 'something' but have no clue what they're talking. Sending players to talk-forums like Subsim or from A to B without at least providing a precise link is exactly what drove me mad when my game didn't work and I was searching for help, but never got anywhere near a WORKING solution. And when I saw that beginners only get welcomes instead of help I didn't even bother to register there.

The wrong and often nonsensical instructions posted there were the reason that I sat down and wrote up my "complete package guide".

JUST *FOLLOW* THE INSTRUCTIONS! IT'S VERY EASY!

I had a great experience on the subsim forums. The info on those forums is very accurate it also has the largest library of content for these games on it that exists.

The GWX install works on the steam folder. There's no reason to use the un-necessary extra, insecure, virus threat warning producing stuff mentioned in your thread you linked. They don't work, they're not needed, and they cause security throw alarms. This method I posted doesn't include or do any of that. It just works.

I assume you are using a copy of SH3 installed outside of any Steam related folder and have applied the SFSF fix, before installing GWX. Did you , by chance, also install a WideScreen mod and then the h.sie mod using JSGME ? If so, there is your problem. Get rid of the h.sie thingy. It conflicts with the Widescreen mod. I had the same issue. It also messes up your ability to save whenever you want and ruins your fun. You simply don't need it to run GWX and the Widescreen mod.
I also play uboat.. In fact I played it first (before trying SH5 and now SH3). I'm sure I'll buy SH4 soon enough :)

I have no issue with UBOAT.. But it needs a bunch of mods to really be playable as well. And with the speed that the devs are putting out preview updates (and the game breaking bugs on the stable branch).. I am going to let them get a little further along in development and try it again every few months.

It is fun to play and I like the crew/officer controls there.
I don't use any mods and haven't run in to any bugs. Mods might be why you have them and I don't. I'm doing the same, giving the devs some time to get 129 stable. It's going to change the game quite a bit from what I've seen of it. Then I'm hoping they add some of the mods as official content like manual targeting. I don't use TDC I let the officers do it but I know it's a popular mod that's apparently well made.
