Of course, I never would have found KSP if SHIII hadn't been bricked by Windows.. Now I have two kick @$$ sim games! :)
I had forgotten how much fun it is to raid Scapa Flow.
Do any of the patches/mods in JSGME Supermod fix the bad weather glitch that would cause it to blow 15mps for 18 months at a time? That was the second reason I put the game down so long ago.
Edit here it is

So far so good. Easy to install with JSGME, quick to load and no crashing.

The detail on the ships is a nice upgrade too, but the patch and mod totally fixes the resolution and weather issues.
Subsim is a great resource too.
Thanks again for this post. I had no idea there were still people playing this game in 2020.
To think I only 'resurfaced' myself after nearly a 17 years of not playing sub sims. It was only the steam sale with SH3 that brought all my memories back! It was £1.48 and I couldn’t be bothered digging the cd out and running the star force removal patch etc etc etc. When I logged in to Subsim, my last post was 2003! I have even got back into SH5. Purely because of the free roam aspect on the sub (inspired by UBoat)
I’m more amazed like yourself that people even *noticed* my post! The fact that even 6 or so people are still searching and wanting to play again, says we’re all old gits stuck reminiscing in the past. 😂
Thing is, I have the money for new games. I have a full-room size VR playspace but I have a hard time finding fun games to play.
Most of the games I play are at least 5 years old quite a few are even older. My go-to VR game is Skyrim VR.
Fun games stick around to become classics.
SH3 is a classic. It sets the standard. There are many like it, but nothing quite as good. LSH3 and subsim are the polish this old boat needs to make it work on W10 in 2020. It takes a bit of doing but the game is better than most of what came out in 2019.
VR, because again I’ve been through the history of gaming, is just so heavily reliant on - the same old like 3D- devs making games work for it. All the games that are my classics are not VR. So I’m not buying into something the same cost of a graphics card, yet only plays couple of games that interest me - ETS 2, ATS and Skyrim being them. So now it’s quality over quantity. I’m forever playing older stuff on GoG. I still have collectors stuff, like the green Steel Battalion controller, games(s) and Xbox. Or other collectors box stuff on PC, SH4 limited steel box edition being another plus lots more in storage. But I’m more into home cinema now. As you say though, you can’t stop playing classics like SH3.
I'm not aware of any games in the genre that would be as realistic-feeling and good as this one. And I haven't discovered it until just a few years ago. (SH4 was great and I enjoyed hundreds of hours of it, but playing for the winning side doesn't feel as hard and desperate, plus it ended up having late game slowdown problems I couldn't solve. SH5 by all accounts is garbage, Cold Waters is a freaking cartoony arcade, and a couple of early access titles I looked at seem like they need some time to mature.)
I've also helped folks on the forum who didn't know some of the basics, apparently getting into it for the first time. So, not everyone is reminiscing here, some are lucky enough to be experiencing it for the first time. ;)
There is a few crackers out there. This the best bomber sim RPG made. A bit clunky, but nothing like it.

It’s also here on steam. You can do your own skins, crew jackets etc, etc. With the .OMF editor.
