You still have maple trees on your land? They can still be cutting down for firewoods (not recommended for normal circumstances, but in your case there's no other options).
Yes, pine wood is best for firewood (if you are able to ignore that pine log has huge size, that is).
Maple is also good, but you need to maple trees for your prime business - maple syrup production, you know!
That's why I said maple tree as firewood is "not recommended".
Anyways glad to hear you are successfully recovered from tree shortage.
Remember one thing that fertilizer can also apply with trees (will grow about x1.5 faster).
To make fertilizer, open compost lid and input ingredient. You can use organic stuff such as potatoes or poutine.
Once fill some ingredient, close lid and wait until its ready to pack (process will take some time).
After for while, fertilizer pack can be produced via machine handle (lever right side).
To use fertilizer pack, grab and equip them, then apply into trees or plants, you know, just like other usable items.
Assuming you have the cuttings, and sugar water production to spare, maple wood is indeed the optimum wood. Its firewood sells for the most, but unless you're really hurting for cash (or are much farther into the game) - I wouldn't recommend it; they're too valuable for building/running the sugar shack.
The time spent waiting for any given tree to mature yields more logs, simple as. Granted, this strategy only works well if you're pretty far along, which you don't seem to be.
The cottage can prevent a softlock of cutting too many trees down, too soon - but it's expensive and without reliable syrup production it will take you quite a while to unlock. If you really must, grind out some pizza jobs and sell whatever joints/fries you can, buy the pruning loopers, and slowwwwly but surely start planting as many maples as you can. Eventually, you can grow half for sugar water, and half to cut for their wood. It's what I usually push for, before I get the electric heater. More logs you can make = more firewood you can make = more you can sell/more you can burn for syrup.
You could also just grind the hell out of gardening and pizza delivery and buy the cottage outright with your earnings, but don't expect to stay sane in the process.
Tldr tho if all else fails, and you're not too far into the game, consider starting over. Use the wisdom you have now from the start. I know I had to a few times. It really doesn't take long to restore early game progress if you know a thing or two about the game.
