This is how it works: SH4 and Win 10

This is what worked for me. I got Silent Hunter 4 to work in Windows 10.

[01] - Purchase, download and install SH4 just as any other Steam-game.
[02] - Run Steam. Go to LIBRARY. Select SH4.
[03] - Open settings on the right. Open game-folder, it looks like
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Wolves of the Pacific
[04] - In there, find the file SH4.EXE.
[05] - Make a right-click on it and click PROPERTIES
[06] - You see a COMPATIBILITY dropdown tab with the text
"Run this program in compatibility mode for"
[07] - Select "Windows XP SP2"
[08] - Look to "Change high DPI settings", a dialog opens.
[09] - Find the box with "Use this setting to fix scaling problems"
[10] - Check that.
[11] - Find the box with "Override high DPI saling behavior"
[12] - Select "Scaling peformed by" to "Application"
[13] - Exit with OK.

Now you can start the original vanilla game and enjoy.

Extra steps that I took to run mods with this game:

[14] - Run Steam. Go to LIBRARY. Select SH4.
[15] - Open settings on the right. Open game-folder, it looks like
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Wolves of the Pacific
[16] - Go 1 folder up, you're now in "common" and see the game-folder.
[17] - Make a right-click on it and click CUT.
[18] - Go to a location totally elsewhere on your hard-drive.
OUTSIDE Steam!
OUTSIDE any folder controlled by Windows!
NOT in "Programs" or any other Windows-folder
I created E:\SH4
[19] - Go into that folder.
[20] - Make a right-click in it and click PASTE.
[21] - Download Steam-Fix-for-SH4[rb.gy] and unpack into this folder, too.
[22] - Download 4GB-Patch by NTcore[ntcore.com]
[24] - Run 4GB-Patch.EXE and apply to SH4.EXE
[25] - Only cosmetic: Rename "Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific" to "SH4-original".

With these extra-steps I achieve that...
- Steam doesn't anylonger disturb my game-play or cause crashes.
- Steam doesn't anylonger "verify" the SH4-game-files.
- Steam doesn't anylonger remove the changes that I want.
- Steam doesn't anylonger remove the mods that I want.
- I can also run with mods that require more memory without crashing.

How to patch to v1.4? I tried the UL folder update but I still see v1.3.

There is no version 1.4, in Steam at least. Wolves of the Pacific is vers 1.3 The update to Silent Hunter 4 Labeled U-boat missions which is misleading. It is the upgrade for SH4 and it becomes ver 1.5, which is what you need if you want to do any of the mods. It also fixes a number of issues in the 1.3 version.

I am having issues as well, when i do what he said to do to make it compatible, it keeps bringing up a screen when i click the exe asking if i wanna let it make changes, n when i say yes, it shows 3 or 4 error messages about stuff not in the main game folder. That the same issue your having?

None of these suggestions are working for me. SH4 will not even launch either by the Steam launcher or directly from Explorer. With Steam, the play button turns to blue, then goes back to green to play. I've tried all the compatibility modes, etc.

I did everything and it works but one problem the screen is black. I can hear audio but nothing on the display.

Hi, need some help. Looked through the game files and couldn't find SH4.Exe

There is a application, but when I look through the properties there is no compatibility tab.

Yeah, I got it specifically for Trigger Maru and some mods converted from SH3. This solution is usually hit or miss. Doesn't work on my end, unfortunately. The only real reason to play SH4 is the mods, or I suppose the prettier graphics.
