Recommended mod?
Is there any mods someone can recommend to bring out the best in SH4? I'm looking for something more-or-less gameplay oriented.

There are a LOT of mods available over at subsim.com You need to decide what you're looking for. I opted for a number of mods to make the game more the way I wanted it.

Some want it easier, and still others want it more difficult and even more realistic.

For me the best SH4 mod is "Fall of the Rising Sun" you can find it here http://www.subsim.com/index.php on the forums. These folks have made SH4 an amazing great sim! It includes many if not all the above mentioned individual mods and then some.
at first, I was choked that they were charging for a premium account to download mods but then I saw it's only a buck for a month and get 25-40 mods per day depending on size. All in all, it's fair

Ralles RealModPack combines some of the more important, must-have mods in one package, with the right versions and the compatibilities sorted out. Also adds some commonly used minor mods and some graphics mods and tweaks. Its thread has 26 pages, very popular.

It includes:

TMO; Trigger Maru Overhaul; one of the main megamods.

RSRDC; historical convoys; practically everyone uses it.

OTC; optical targeting correction; stock periscope and uzo views are wonky and inaccurate. This fixes that and gives a larger scope view with less wasted border around the edges. Radar scope has range markings overlay. Adds dial to input range directly without using stadimeter. Necessary mod.

ISP; improved ship physics; stock ships (and you) accelerate way too fast (literally get out of path of torpedoes with a roadrunner dash), and coast along forever when engine stops, takes 12 minutes to come to a stop from 5kts. Fixes this, fixes turning. Necessary mod.

Other minor mods and tweaks and graphics are also included.

Damn, this is a well informative answer and you make me want to install sh4 again. I used to play with fotrs. I will try your combos here, thanks.

Me and modding dont sit well together and modding SH4 has proved to be no different.
Let the needless faffing commence.
Make a burner e-mail address, so no one gets my data when subsim are data breached.
Make a pointless subsim account.. FFS making an account to get mods is tedious.
Download the mods.
I follow the instructions to the letter
Click sh4.exe
error.
error.
error.
error etc.
Black screen...
sh4.exe fails to run the game.
Its like its 1998 all over again.
I delete sh4 and reinstall.. all is running fine again, minus the dodgy modded content.
I wonder why Im so against modding.

Can someone help me with manual targeting i cannot hit a bloody thing.

I have fired hundreds torps and hit one ship these last few weeks.

I line up early about 1000m front of course of enemy ship..slow down to 1/3 and ID it.

I get the speed with 3 min marks and set that and AOB to 90.

I set torps to fast and influence and have set different depths but usually i keep it shallow to see where they are going.

They always miss.

I have tried with PK on and PK off same result. I am using FOTRS so that torp solution is not present..to check against.

any advice fellas please?
