...and the game closes, never to open again unless i restart my computer. This is seriously ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying.

It actually minimizes (at least it should, try looking at the bottom right of your taskbar as there should be a little symbol which says defcon when you highlight over it.

No, it never does. It closes completely, and even the task manager doeasn't see it. The only system that reports it to be running is Steam.

This can be turned off in the settings its called something like the panic button

It's the so-called "boss mode", used in workplaces to, y'know.

After I double tap ESC, the game shows up under the hidden icons tray (right side of the task bar, it should show up as the nuke icon by pressing the small upwards arrow).

Thanks for the tip, but that didn't work. I found a way to disable it in the settings, so I guess that's a problem solved.

If youre on windows, there's a little arrow next to your volume controls on your taskbar, where some hidden icons are stores. DEFCON icon will usually be in there. Click it to open the game again.
