Is it possible to tell zombots to maintain the generator?

When the Player is nearby, the zombots give the wood in the players inventory, if not, then they maintain the generator automatically, so far as i noticed.

The generator pulls fuel from your camp storage as well. get you some zombots to a wooded area and they will collect for you.

yup they are very helpful, you put a pylon near the wood, assign them to collect, then they will automatically store those in your storage. My wood generator has been running on itself like this without any care from me.

Later, you will get a water generator too.

Short answer is yes. It wasn't spelled out so clearly, but your collector zombots do not need to actually put anything into the generator. They collect and drop wood into the pylon. Pylon puts wood in camp storage. The generator fuels itself from the camp storage. the generator can be placed anywhere. The pylon to gather wood needs to be near wood location.

No wood ever makes it to my storage, or my generator is burning it too quickly or something. My generator is always dead when I go back to Base, despite having an off-site wood collector Pylon active.
