Anyone have the fan translation?
Or does anyone know how Jast translations are? Do they heavily localize or stray away from source material in favor of 'reading well'? Arunaru meme levels or the removal of anything japanese from the script?

Even if the fan translation isn't 100% complete, I think I'd rather pick that up

I played the JAST version for about two hours and stopped. As far as I can tell the quality is about the same as in World Conquest, so yeah, a lot of unnecessary rewrites and localisations, not to mention getting the tone of the dialogues completely wrong in a few places. Wouldn't recommend.

As for the fan translation, Surferdude from Hongfire did an interface and partial translation on Gold ages ago, I haven't checked on where he's at now myself, but that's probably your best bet.

That new Oppai Academy game surprised me with its sticking to accuracy over readability. Am hyped

Wow, didn't even know that one's coming to Steam. Wishlisted, thanks for that.

Aye. Btw the WWX gacha has nice translations, but has weird censorship going on. Like they made a collage? Using sfw parts of h scenes to cover nsfw bits. :/

I'll do my usual try before buying Oppai Academy, and to see pictures and scenes for translation stuff

Gold is pretty meh in terms of plot, just do it for the lewds honestly, the translation won't save a crap story no matter how you translate it.

If you thought the story of original could not get worse - you are in for a surprise.
The lewd quality on the other hand is extremely good.

How the F. do they hire translator? Or what do they make translator do? I don't get it. So much. just so much unique character trains where "normalised" by translating them like anyone can understand instead of keeping their charm. Like everyone who talks in 3rd person using their own name, are always using 1st person. So many moments when someone is being moe or otherwise is translated "properly" so it has 0 Charm. And its lately getting worse and worse. Not just Visual Novels, but even Light Novels, more and more people I see go with fan translation because they are translating without westernising.

Why the F do translation need to be westernised??? They can just add translation Notes for anything that might not be clear instead of changing or removing text altogether??

AFAIK Jast doesn't have an in-house TL team, so it's most likely that they just contract their projects out to whoever seems halfway competent and don't ask for the highest amount of pay, and therefore are likely only doing it for the money and have very little passion about the actual game, hence the sanitised and bland style they chose to translate it in. Also, as a publisher, Jast needs to cater to a more general audience who may not be familiar with Anime terminology, and that's why everything is westernising for their benefit. Fan translations on the other hand are aimed mostly towards people who are already savvy about the medium, therefore they can afford to stick closer to the original text and be more faithful in their translation.

This is not to excuse the generally subpar quality of Jast's localisations however. Their translations are mediocre at best and often riddled with errors, not to mention taking way longer than it has any right to be. But Jast is the one who has the licence, and as long as they don't screw it up monumentally they have the luxury of not giving a damn about QA, and as a result they often don't.

You say jast, but actually, is pretty much everyone.....Any freaking Light novel I buy has censorship. Moments removed. Like I wanted to read Jobless Reincarnation until I found out they Removed parts because the translator was to lazy or it was see to "intense" for the average reader.... And again, all other Visual Novels are the same. Like you can copy paste what you use said with replace Jast with Mangagamers and its prefect fit.

They want people to buy their stuff...sadly...this is aimed for newcomers....the more you are into it....the more you want to read/play fan translation....
