Map is dark. Is it a bug or intended?

Somehow most of the map is very very dark, almost like I didn't visit it: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3386702412

However some past areas became bright and readable after I've left them. But the current one mostly explored is very-very dark. I can see some outlines but can't navigate. It looks like a bug.

Ah nevermind. Turns out I need to buy a map from a merchant somewhere in the are and then it's becomes bright and visible. Strange design choice. It would make sense to see the map you've explored so far. But it is what it is.

Yeah, it's a weird feature but usually not a big deal. The map vendor is often close by.

It's quite annoying to find the map vendor without any working map feature, just to be able to see the places you've already visited. I like the common system where you always have visible what you've visited yourself, but buying the map allows you to see a general shape of the map and/or allows to see the items. Otherwise it's a tumbling in the dark and later you get what you would usually expect for free but for some symbolic money.
