Ans sorry but nop, controls are flawless, now that i got the crystal arrow, i find myself flying through the levels fighting mobs and exploring like nothing. If i die its against a boss, or some challenging and mostly optional platform challenge like the Emperor trials. Honestly, considering how hard the game is at some points, im surprised i barely died during my playtime, its pretty well balanced with a good health system and plenty of checkpoints.
Few people will like it, the majority will not.
glad to hear, that im not the only one, who feel this way. yeah, i wanna jump of the wall every time i press A, not 80%. Especially when some sections demand to make 5 to 10 jumps and i you fail (thx to controls) - you restart from the bottom.
In White Palace (and in HK generally) there was no problems - controls in HK is precise as hell - if you need to correct your jump - you can correct it due to a pixel with your stick. Here the characters inertia is so bad, that you can overjump platform, correct your jump and overjump it again. And platforms edges are so tiny (similar problem was in Salt and Sacntuary, but not so bad) that of you miss the edges pixel - you can either bump into the edge and fall or just fall from "overjump". It you look gamedesign videos - there is whole chapter how to made edges in platforming - they should be invisible but wider than actual platform itself.
Also - there is really some big checkpoints issue - yuo can find 2 lanterns in 2 meters from each other, or you can jump 3 screens without any and if you fail - do it iver from the bottom. This Light House (or whaterev it calls in English) is just... Crap. It not HARD hard, its just poorly designed, with overextended length, so with messy controls its just painful to play. Lol, i never ragequit games in last few years (no DS, Nioh games, no HK or other metroidvanias made me so anger just bcs stupid character doesnt listen to my actions). I have a fell that there is some delay in this game, honestly, like some cooldowns on jumps, which is ridiculous considering walljumps sections etc
Ah, almost forgot - another great example of issues - after respawn there is delay on jump sometimes - and if you respawn on platform and try to jump to the next one immediately (if i remember correcty when character is still in invincibility frames after respawn) - 90% chance that jump wont work and you just fall down and die - this happened to me so many times i cant even count... After few times this happens i even begin so suicide character to restart with full health, bcs its nonsense to lose 2 health instead of 1 right after respawning bcs of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ controls
Anyone who played platformers extensively would be familiar with the term "input buffer".
Input buffer means that you're given a grace period of holding down the action button slightly before it can get executed, so the game stores it in memory and lets you perform it when possible.
The reason input buffer is so important here, is because this game is also a precision platformer, and not everyone are so adept at them that they can hit the button at the exact moment they make contact with a surface.
So technically, it IS your fault for failing to execute those jumps, but you're not fully to blame, because honestly that mechanics should 100% exist in this game, and sadly it's not there.
I personally dislike that as well, but overall I can certainly say that the controls - while being stiff, work as they should in the grand scheme of things.
