quality EA DICE code as always

Dice has nothing to do with this. It's EA and their decision to terminate Origin and make a brand new piece of software to use as a launcher. This being the EA App
Origin also had problems with EALink, so it's not EA App problem alone. Anyways, if you start EALauncher.exe as admin all EA games should work again.

Except they don't. I tested this "fix" 5 hours ago when i first encountered the issue.
Also i'm positive by now that EA app is just origin renamed, so.

Ok, one of these 3 things fixed for me:

-Go into the game folder for 2042 in the 'steamapps' folder and make sure that every BF2042 related .exe is NOT being run as an administrator (uncheck it in properties).
Do the same for all EA app related .exe found in C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop\EA Desktop then restart PC and try

-Alternatively close Steam and the EA app. Open task manager, look for
'EA Backround Service', end the task. Then go to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Desktop\EA Desktop look for the .exe 'EALauncher' right click it and start it FROM THE RIGHT-CLICK MENU as administrator!!! since the checkbox option for it in the properties sometimes doesn't seem to save or work. If the game launches you're fine afterwards and don't need to do all of this again next time.

-or Time fixed it

Sounds like taking credit for something that never happened XD

I did the opposite of your first bullet (i.e. set everything ending in .exe to have administrator privileges in both the BF2042 folder and the EA app folder), restarted my PC and ran BF2042. I got an update and everything started working

Technology is still being run by magic in 2023 so anything can work or not work really.
