Why does everyone seem to hate the concept of specialists?
I just watched the trailer showing each specialist so far and pretty much every comment said they hated it and didn't want the same dudes running around but I don't get it.

Instead of calling them specialists call them classes again and instead of their names, name them after a class:

Mckay - Special Forces (or w/e they were called in BF2)
Falk - Medic
Boris - Engineer
Casper - Recon

and boom: you have what you were asking for by simply changing the labels. You can then tailor each guy with the unlimited weapon/gadget choices to make the classic classes, the only thing unique to each specialist is 1 passive and 1 active ability, that's it.

As far as everyone looking the same... in BF4 every single dude of each class looked the same and there were no 'skins' just subtle changes to the camo.

So is there something I'm missing here or are people just put off by the labels? Not trying to start a war here by the way, I just want some honest feedback on why you don't like the specialist concept because I am completely indifferent to it.

There was that there were uniformity in the skins. they where part of a faction, so people didn't really look at the skins. also the implementation of a creation system form a player was either not possible or not part of the production (many dreamed of it) until Battlefield v with its introduction of their specialist/without ability, which majority of the playerbase disliked. though they liked the plain characters where you could dress up. The problem with those heroes where they standed to much out.

My wish for this was instead of having a hero with their special ability, have a character creation system, where you can shape your identity, then from the class management there are class gadget and a unique ability you can choose. It would be a further development of the creation system of BFV and people could make their unique person

I agree with you on the uniformity thing, I don't like when, in games like these, everyone looks too unique, but for the most part everyone look appropriately dressed/a part of a team but I guess it remains to be seen what kind of wacky ass skins will be available.

I don't get the hate either. It is just the basic 4 classes we had before, adjust little things here and there like specific gadgets so they can spread out 10 persons (iirc on the website there are 10 so I will just assume that), slap names on them and that's it, that's the specialists for you. I don't mind it at all tbh. EA probably did this so they can sell more cosmetics and idc

I think everyone is worried about the opposing team looking the same too. Since both teams will be non pat and using the same specialists it may get hard to tell the difference between friend and foe. Other games were one faction vs another but i dont think this will be an issue.

The other major thing that people didnt like is that all guns can be used on any class which im very happy about. i think this will allow teams to be much better because i was one of those people who if i wasnt good with the guns i was forced to use i just didnt play that class. I've always been a sniper, dmr, or assault rifle user. The new system allows me to be a better teammate. Not to mention that classes arent limited in any other BF game so everyone already uselessly plays sniper. every now and again you will end up on the team with nothing but snipers and get smoked. i think the plus system will also help this because people who do long distance aren't as handicapped by there 8x zoom or higher scope if they want to get close range they can now switch on the fly.

Ya, BF4 already had this. every class could use DMRs, Shotguns, and Carbines., with 1 unique weapon set per class. I'd already go recon with an MTAR for the spawn beacon in a sneaky spot and motion balls to chuck into a base before attacking. The new system allows more of that mixing and matching to happen.

i think most peoples problem lies with the fact that they will be tied to the battlepass (first 4 battlepasses included in the season 1 pass so you get the first 4 with gold or higher) , so if they drop a new specialist with an op gadget players will be inclined to buy the pass to unlock them sooner if they were just added for free to the game it would be different, heres hoping they dont drop new ones on a store eventually

They already confirmed new specialists will be free for everyone and won't be locked behind the battlepass, the BP will only have skins and cosmetics.

The Battlefield™ 2042 Gold Edition contains:
Early access to game launch
Year 1 Pass: 4 New Specialists (1 per Season), 4 Battle Passes (1 per Season), and 3 Epic Skin Bundles (”Blistered Earth”, ”Tempest”, and ”Cold Blood”) ,

why would they make a note of it being a selling feature if they were just going to give it to everyone? it may be in the free battlepass somwhere but you will have to buy it to get them upfront

I think it's mostly that people don't want to have to play a specific specialist to use a certain gadget, or utility, but it's not really that big of a deal. You can still use the guns your class can use, but it's understandable to want to use a certain gadget on any class. I'm sure the specialists won't be class locked also.
TROSSO24 Sep 8, 2021 @ 6:20pm
From what i gathered and asked about directly if you have gold or higher the specialists are immediately unlocked. If you have standard or wait until launch or later to buy you will have to work to unlock them. Im guessing similar to R6S. Im personally ok with this as i plan to play this alot anyway and it gives me something to work towards. If they are only releasing one at a time it shouldn't take long to unlock.

As for why they put it in the editions like that idk. The way they worded things was very poor and they still haven't done a great job explaining it. Since they've already came out and stated that nothing is behind a paywall its only a matter of time until we figure more out.

If they go back on there word ill be pretty mad and ill probably cancel my preorder.

They have said that all gameplay additions will be "free." What you bring up is also true though.
It's a safe assumption that if you have the battle pass you will immediately unlock the new specialist at the first tier of the premium track. Then after a set time like two weeks you will be able to purchase that operator for "free" using in-game currency like Battle Bonds(if previous BF games are anything to go by you will have way more than enough).

Basically, if you aren't sure how something will be in this game just look to Rainbow Six Siege as that is, unfortunately, what EA/DICE seem to be emulating.

None of the specialists seem that interesting to me mostly because none of them seem to have specialisation for when you're in a vehicle, or trying to take out a vehicle.

Plus the Webster guy is basically what the game had years ago in Battlefield special forces.

wait...

so unlike hero shooters like overwatch, we wont have access to all 10 specialists when first starting the game, the ultimate edition will get us only 4 more of the other 6 specialists, players that did pay for the ultimate addition officially have an advantage if they poses the right specialist for the job, and they will be adding more specialists that we have still unlock?

portal and beta gameplay better be fire cause that doesn't make BF2042 like a hero shooter, it makes it SO much worse.

i need a source or elaboration on this. i honestly don't want to not like the specialists even more than i already do.
ArthorPen Sep 8, 2021 @ 9:21pm
there are three reasons why i personally don't like specialists

it removes a good portion of battlefield's identity that made it significantly different than other games; no more prominent factions, no more faction loyal soldiers, and no more dedicated role playing classes (even though i like unrestrictive loadouts, but you don't need specialists to do that).

another is the thought that they feel forced, were never needed, or unanimously asked for before the reveal trailer. if one were to suggest a system like this 3 years ago, it would have been seen as a terrible idea. in the 2042 reveal trailer, we assumed that the soldiers were fully customizable (that it made sense because a lot of people liked the customization from five.), but when dice casually said that these were set operator-like characters, things only then got admittedly controversial.

finally, its just very disappointing in general that we could have had something more natural, progressive, and even more unrestrictive than something that feels experimental.
