Widescreen fix
I wrote a little fix, which should apply letter and pillar boxing to display the games 16:9.4 image without stretching on any resolution.
Download: https://www.dropbox.com/s/teqkol23sf5k5jy/BGE%20widescreen%20fix.rar
Just drop the files in the zip in the same Directory as the BGE exe. Also if you've changed the NoBands value in the registry, you should change it back to 0.

If you get an Error message like "DirectX 9 was not installed properly" or "This application has failed to start because D3DX9_43DLL was not found ", you first need to run DXSetup in the Redist subfolder.

I've also included a way to overwrite the game's resolution setting, which might help the people having issues under Windows 8, though i haven't tested it since I don't use Windows 8. Just change the value bUseOverwrite in d3d9 ini to true and setX and setY to your desired resolution. Antialiasing has to be disabled in the games settings for this to work.

Update 07.04.2016:
You now can force borderless windowed mode by setting the option "bBorderlessWindow" in d3d9.ini to true. This should also fix the issue where the HUD breaks after using Alt-Tab.

Update 24.10.2016:
New version that fixes shadows not being displayed.

Update 15.06.2017:
The download now includes BGEResolutionSettings.exe which allows you to change the resolution setting. For the Steam version you might have to launch the game once in order for the setup to be completed before you can change the resolution.

My original description might have been confusing. The game is always rendered with an 16:9.4 aspect ratio, it only changes the amount of letter- and pillar boxing that is applied, so the fix already works with 16:10 resolution.

Works like a charm, thanks.

My bad, I know what I did wrong, but i won't get around to fix it until the weekend.

Thank you for your work! I use Win 8 64 Bit and had the issue before, that i couldn't change the resolution. I copied your fix, changed the parameters like suggested. But now the game somehow starts with a higher resolution but is only displayed in a very small box in the upper left corner, while the rest is grey. When changing resolution the whole screen with the grey changes too, so i guess it might be another problem not connected with the fix? I somehow couldn't choose any resolution in the application manager, just showed a blank space. i got a nvida gtx 680, and an intel i5 3570 cpu. read a lot of other guides but got curious again when finding your fix :)

It seems I got a bit ahead of myself my last post. I fixed the issue that made the game crash after alt-tabbing out of it, but now the lower part of the screen remains gray after tabbing back into the game and right now I can't really think of a way to solve this issue.

I've updated the fix, the game should use your whole screen now.

Wow, your fix works great. So much better this way. Thanks a ton for your work on this.
Just noting, I have this same issue, still no fix on my end. Don't know if I need to go into the registry and do something or something, but as it stands, it's still a small screen in the top left corner. However, oddly enough all UI is full sized.

Do you have Antialiasing activated in the games settings? I've noticed that this causes this problem when used with the resolution override.

Alright that works perfectly. Before this I had to change my monitor to 4:3 every time I played, and even then I had a huge black frame. So thank you sir. You are gentleman and a scholar.

Fantastic! Works beautifully... two very small bars on the left and right side, but that is so much better than huge bars on top and bottom, and the whole image stretched horizontally.
Thanks
By the way... this also seems to have fixed the flickering textures bug.
