Would be nice to know how much room a shelter for animails requires, all it says is not enough room

Doesn't give me an indication of WHY there isn't enough room, and in any case, if there isn't enough room why can't I clear cut some forest to Make room?

Yea the space requirement seems extremely aggressive, makes placing them nearly impossible in most places. Heck, I struggled to place one for its tutorial quest because it's so finicky.
