October 2017 and this fix just saved me from refunding this game. Thank you!
Alt-Enter and you should be ok if you have a black screen. As long as your sistem is not frozen. Happened to me and this was the solution.
That solution was suggested by a few others way back in this thread (or maybe another thread), but did not work for me. The Black Screen was due due to the graphics not being drawn on the screen due to a compatibility issue with the coding of the DX_10 file, when run through certain GPUs.
Hitting Alt-Enter just opens up Big Picture Mode in Steam. It is totally awesome that it resolved your particular issue, but I don't think it would be the solution for a true compatibility issue with the DX_10 file and the GPU. Hopefully it will work for others, though, as it is a more simple method.
Also.... we really shouldn't have to be troubleshooting AC1 like this. C'mon now, that's just lame...
AC:O Black screen on start up fix
disable secondary monitors, set primary(only monitor) to 1920x1080
start AC:O set game to desired resolution and exit the game
turn back on secondary screens and set primary to the resolution you wanted
start AC:O
I added -windows at the end of the target path and it fixed the issue for me. For example:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\Assassin's Creed Origins\ACOrigins.exe" -window
Edit: ups, I thought that was the forum for Origins. But I did notice that people have the same problem with all Ubisoft games. Welp.
Btw, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
