No need to change the file names. You won't be able to use the full DirectX 10 features if you do that. Just change the "Compatibility" settings for "AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe" to Windows Vista (without SP). It solved the problem. I didn't try the other OS version, so you can give it a try.
I have this exact issue when transferring game data from SSD to HDD. I'm in windows 10 64 bit. I just set the 4 application type files to run as admin then I'm good!

The problem I had was that my graphics card (GeForce GTX 560) wonked out with AC1's crappy DirectX 10 version but was fine with the DirectX 9 version. So I went to the game directory (STEAM DIR/steamapps/common/Assassins Creed) and switched the two file names for the DirectX 9 and 10 versions. Then when I launched from Steam/Big Picture Mode everything worked just fine - aside from a little skip on the Ubisoft logo at the beginning.

The having to ALT+F4 bit to quit is still stupid. I would love if Ubi would update it for full big-picture support and clean up some of the messes but it's an old game and that'll never happen.

October 2017 and this fix just saved me from refunding this game. Thank you! :2016snocone:

SIDE NOTE:
The only way I could get this to run without renaming the files (I made back ups), was to set the Compatibility Mode of AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe to Windows Vista Service Pack 2, then I had to go actually right click on the Dx10.exe file and choose Run As Administrator. If I set it to Run As Admin in the Compatibility Properties, then I kept getting an error with an invalid File Path for the Dx10.exe file, which was bogus.

SOLUTION

Alt-Enter and you should be ok if you have a black screen. As long as your sistem is not frozen. Happened to me and this was the solution.

That solution was suggested by a few others way back in this thread (or maybe another thread), but did not work for me. The Black Screen was due due to the graphics not being drawn on the screen due to a compatibility issue with the coding of the DX_10 file, when run through certain GPUs.

Hitting Alt-Enter just opens up Big Picture Mode in Steam. It is totally awesome that it resolved your particular issue, but I don't think it would be the solution for a true compatibility issue with the DX_10 file and the GPU. Hopefully it will work for others, though, as it is a more simple method.

Also.... we really shouldn't have to be troubleshooting AC1 like this. C'mon now, that's just lame...

AC:O Black screen on start up fix

disable secondary monitors, set primary(only monitor) to 1920x1080

start AC:O set game to desired resolution and exit the game

turn back on secondary screens and set primary to the resolution you wanted

start AC:O
Seeing that the game is currently on humble (I got mine there too) I notice a lot of people reporting this problem.

I added -windows at the end of the target path and it fixed the issue for me. For example:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\games\Assassin's Creed Origins\ACOrigins.exe" -window

Edit: ups, I thought that was the forum for Origins. But I did notice that people have the same problem with all Ubisoft games. Welp.

For people having problems with DX10 in AC, try to set the Compatibility option to Vista with Service Pack 2, for both the AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe and the AssassinsCreed_Game.exe
Thanks, it worked! I'm on Windows 10, the game launches correctly from the game files, but not from the shortcut. I set the "Compatibility mode" setting to "Windows Vista" (not SP2) only for the "AC_game.exe" file and it works now.
So nothing in this thread worked for me. If i change the compatibilty settings the game just loads a black screen then closes out back to desktop. If I revalidate the files it starts in black screen and plays sound of the game but no picture. I also deleted the game and then installed fresh and still no luck. Any more ideas on what it could be?
Just ask for a refund. I have my support ticket opened for almost half a year now and just keep sending me the same unhelpful copy pasted messages over and over again

This worked for me too. Cheers! :lunar2019grinningpig:

I tried this one too and it also works, so thanks to you too.
Btw, I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

For anyone still having problems or has this issue in the future, none of the above helped me, but when I set run as administrator on DX9, DX10, and Game removed the black screen and showed me the intro video.
Your problem is unrelated to this issue though, I believe. That's just due to incorrectly set permissions on your own PC. You still ran the DX9 executable, right?
fix for me: when the game opens in black screen but you can hear the background menu music, press ctrl+alt+delete then exit out of it. black screen should be gone and the game waiting for you.
