Revelations is the weakest of the main series but contains some important story moments. Do not skip any of the other games though.
If you have the time and money, you can try AC1, but frankly, the game mechanics was so frustrating for me. Although i'm on PC, so maybe that's why...
AC3 is debatable - frankly i wish I dind't spend the full $20 bucks on it. If you can wait until a 75% discount, then AC3 might be worth it.
AC 1 is the concept of the series. It is by far the least refined and polished of the group, but I feel it contains the very heart of the series. It may feel repetitive, the modern day scenes do suck and feel like a stop light, the gamer itself can be buggy and fustrating, but it's atmoshere, storyline, and general feel more then compensate for it.
I also like how in AC 1 you don't just do a story, you get a name, go to a city and gather intellegence, make preperations, then kill your target; as buggy as it is, it's the truest to being a real assassin as you can get in the series, there is nothing else really like it. Imo, you can't be a fan of the series without liking, or atleast having a respect for this game.
2, and Brotherhood much better in terms of fuctionality, and combines that with some iconic characters and a good story. Not only are they great games, but they are a fine addition to the series, and generally carry the feeling of the first. It graphics hold up and as an Italian-American, I love being in Renaissance italy.
Blackflag is right on par with 2 and BH, if not better. It takes the original idea, and takes it into a new direction, it feels fresh, the characters are great, the story is captivating, and it really feels like a great reboot of the series. it changes the infamous combat system, Pirating and Whale hunting are very fun. Blackflag sticks true the the original idea of Assassin's creed while still being different and something new.
As for the others. . . I wouldn't recommend them.
Revelations does wrap up Ezio's storyline, as it takes place as a direct sequal after Brotherhood, so I would say it's very important to the story if you are recomending II and Brotherhood.

WRONG!!! Rogue is a prequel to III. It is supposed to be a brigde from IV to III as it takes place during the seven years war.
