AC1 freezing and unfreezing
I've been playing this game for good few weeks now with no issues right up until today, here's what happens;

- Game launches with black screen for few seconds

- Ubisoft starting screen freezes, unfreezes and sound stutters

- I get into the game and now the game freezes for about 30 seconds and then unfreezes, but it happens so often that it's pretty unplayable in this state.

I thought it would be because my drivers haven't been updated but even after updating, the problem persists.

This happens with both Dx9 and Dx10 versions.

Steam Overlay is off.

No bluetooth or wireless enabled ( as I've seen this cause problems to others )

Like I said, the game has been running perfectly fine right up until today, what's changed?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated as I adore this game!

I think there were early rumblings about AC1 being remade as Mirage DLC, but then Mirage ended up being significantly scaled back. Which is probably just as well, because I think AC1 deserves a standalone remake. The upcoming 20th anniversary of the series in 2027 would be the ideal time to do that, although the current roadmap for the franchise suggests Ubisoft have their hands full with what's already been announced.

My game was working perfectly until a few days ago and im also getting this freezing stuttering problem. I went here and it diddnt help. https://steamcommunity.com/app/15100/discussions/0/864949037837351686/?l=hungarian&ctp=2
For some reason going offline and disabling the internet connection solves the problem. they need to fix this asap.
ASAP. Yeah. Sure. It is 22nd of May, 2024. Game still freezes/stutters if Internet connection is on.
Freezing is still happening. Hosts file fix works but really should have been fixed by now. Even if they were to update the IP address in the game to a loopback.
For me what works is to just disconnect from the internet while playing.

I solved this issue the same way it was solved many years ago, without turning off internet, by updating hosts file but this time with a different IP. In my case the stuttering/freezing was solved redirecting IP 203.132.26.155.

In order to do that you must edit the file "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts". This file is protected so you must run your text editor under administrator account.

Add the following lines at the end (the comment may be skipped of course):
# Assassin's Creed non-functional server
203.132.26.155 127.0.0.1

This line will redirect all connections to Ubisoft's AC server to your own computer which will make the connections fail quickly, removing the freezing in the game. I read somewhere this server was user to track statistics about the game usage, so blocking the connections shouldn't cause any problem to the game.

BTW, I left the old Ubisoft's IPs in my host file, not sure if they are still used, but here they are:

216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.133 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.134 127.0.0.1

Ok, just went through the launch, the intro movie and about 5 minutes worth of gameplay and

Assassin's Creed non-functional server
203.132.26.155 127.0.0.1

That specific section is all that is needed and works.

However..
This workaround wasn't reasonable or any better years ago and it still isn't now. I've never been comfortable with user-side OS file modifications to make a video game work on PC. I know enough to be able to give the host file specific permissions that I can just as easily take away, but not everyone else will be. For any Ubisoft dev or community manager checking? DO NOT use this as an excuse to think the problem is over.

EDIT:
Rude to not give thanks. Apologies gcontijoch and thank you for the time and effort.

2024 and this solution is still worked. Thanks so much guys

You just edit that same file and delete the line(s) you added. It's like editing a .txt or a Word document. Trust me, though, you're never gonna need to remove it. This is a set-it-and-forget-it solution.

Hello @Acnograine and everyone else.

The problem of stuttering or freezing in AC1 is a known issue.
You can resolve it by switching the Ubisoft Connect app to the offline mode.

In the new app, you can do it on the login screen (you may have to log out first) in Settings > Start Ubisoft Connect in Offline Mode.

Hope it helps.

Yes, I have a question. The online functionality in this game is older than some of the people playing it and it's not even remotely necessary to get the full experience of AC1. Why not just A: fix the one server that it's endlessly trying to connect to, or B: release an update that disables that aspect of the game permanently so that it doesn't try connecting anymore?

Dear Vinci,

Im not playing from the Ubisoft App but directly from Steam. I managed to solve the issure with the aforementioned deavtivation of the server in the hosts file, but this is unacceptable for 2024.
turn off your wifi on you pc and then play offline mode, it stops freezing for me
