does Director's Cut include subtitles?

a long time ago I tried the first Assassin's Creed and gave up on the game due to a lack of subtitles. I have some hearing difficulties and I remember a specific scene where you had to eavesdrop on a conversation through a vent or a grate or something and I couldn't make out a word. given that story was my main motivation for trying the game in the first place I gave up on it
I don't think it was the directors cut version that I tried though (though I may be wrong, it was a long time ago) so I'm hoping this version DOES have subtitles or that they've since been patched in (surely the developers wouldn't want to exclude the deaf and hard of hearing gamers?)
so... questions

1. does Assassin's Creed 1 Director's Cut have subtitles?
2. if not, which is the first Assassin's Creed game that does have subtitles?
3. how much do I miss out on by missing out the non-subtitled game(s)?

3. Depends on how much you are dependent on subtitles. IMO, Assassin's Creed is worth to be played, even without subtitles. If there is something in English, you will get it. If something is in other languages, it's not important to the story. However you can watch a walkthrough with subtitles on YouTube. Search a channel called "Zevik", select "Assassin's Creed" playlist, turn on subtitles and enjoy the story.
